I know we are about the lowest in the country but.... "dropping" is the key word. :)

BTW, I found a good, easy to implement anti-theft feature over the weekend.

If you move the white latch on the big harness at the top of the firewall to the open position, the truck won't start. You don't have to unplug it, just move it to open. It only caused a small amount of grief...

Sounds like a hard lesson learned. [laugh]

Not too bad. A little worried after the first couple of tries at cranking. Then when I didn't hear the lift pump, I was thinking that the LP died. Then just before pulling the plug on the pump and checking for connectivity, I figured I'd check for codes. That's when I discovered that I had no connectivity to the ECM. So I rechecked everywhere I recently had my arms and hands since the last time it started.

AND then how many codes are we resetting after all this? Reason is some of us dont have a Smarty yet! haha.....[duhhh]

Just two.. No bus communication from ECM and a companion code. But they'd only be set if you try to start it. [laugh]

You'll have to charge higher rent since each person gets more square footage. [laugh]

checkin in again, i wish i could make the event in Ardmore..... its only like 460 miles..... haha.

but the reason i am really checkin in, looks like its water pump time for me. i have a nasty leak, maybe half a cup per shut off?? maybe less. i think its leaking from the shaft seal but dont have a mirror to check....

i went to "carquest" here in town and the pump is only $80 that just blew my mind. seems super cheap to me. YAY!

questions. looks like there are only two bolts holding it on. so i am assuming with my "simple" hand tools and tool kit that i have i should be able to tackle no problem? also about how much coolant will be lost in the operation?

any pointers? THANX fellas.

two bolts is all that holds it on. need a 1/2 " drive ratchet or break over bar for the tensioner. pull belt off of altenator pull bolts out of pump clean sealing surface put new pump on. you can do it. second set of hands helps when trying to get the belt on and off. also you may have to drain the radiator down a little, can't remember for sure.

I think im going to replace my waterpump at 110K when I do my drain/refill on the radiator. Serpentine too. I'd rather replace them at a time and place of my choosing than wait for a failure. And, like Max said...they seem pretty cheap. Cheap enough to make it a "maintenance" item every 100-120K or so.

Does that sound logical....or is it wasting money?

So far.... myself, and 2-3 trucks from the 'Bennington Bunch'! Brian has been challenged by Matt Folsom, to a 6 speed heads up, and said he is working on getting out of a conflict in schedule. But I think he may be worried about loosing. Just a guess on my part! :D

RJ

That's just not even right! [laugh]

I'm heading to Rocky Ridge to go camping/4 wheeling so I had to go back to the house yesterday to pick up everything... So I lost by forfiet I guess?? [duhhh] Need to start planning these things a little better than tuesday week of! [dummy]

Installed my old shifter back in the truck yesterday... Needless to say much happier with the shifting of the truck again... The combination of the DD clutch and the short throw was not good! too much effort to get into gear from stop and shifting... Worked great with a single, just too much now... Put 300+ miles already on it since yesterday and it is going to stay this way...

So anybody want to buy a NV5600 short throw! [coffee]

If there is room, and it's 90* at midnight...I'll join in. I prefer sleeping under the stars but too hot is what it is.

Who showed? What happened
RJ, Matt, Dustin.... Three CTD's. AggieJustin stopped by w/ GF to watch. Noboby broke anything, so was a good time! I discovered that my H2 cam does not make up for 35" tires. Best I could do was a 13.49/101 mph.
Brian... change in shifter should make a big difference, based on how fast Matt can shift his NV5600. He did an all time best... 13.67/100 mph.
Dustin was a first timer and is hooked, I think.

Big crowd and good time!

I'll probably just crash in the truck. I should have a pump to install friday.

Looks like it's AC compressor time. Turned it on this morning and it made a rattling sound for a second and shook the truck when it engaged. That can't be good. HAHA. Oh well. It's only got 140k on it.

Has anyone replaced their starter contacts? Looks like that is my next project. The truck has decided to be selective about when it starts and when it doesn't. another question...

when i do the water pump, going to need more coolant and such. what coolant do i need to get?

my coolant now is pink/brown/rusty lookin. (assuming i cant put the green stuff in)?

assuming thats where the leak is seems to be an easy enough fix. i miss having a place to tinker on things. i dont fancy laying on gravel (if i cant get it from topside) will have to sacrifice some of my moving boxes to lay on.

See that is what I go back and forth on. I can go to all the hassle to get the RV out of storage Friday and load up for the trip...burning fuel etc......and tow it down. And then spend Sunday bringing it back home, flush the sewer tanks[yuk], and put it back up. And my entire 3 day weekend will be spent loading, going to, at Alvarado, and coming home and unloading.

ORRRRR.........do like you are mentioning and just make a day of it on Saturday.

My point is........with the exception of Rowland (who doesn't really want to stay in the camper anyway).......most guys are "playing it by ear". If there is no real committment to me bringing the RV down......im debating if it's worth the hassle and work and fuel to spend 2 days looking at a parking lot. IM not dynoing either way.......as there have been no changes on my truck since July 19th.

What gives? Do yall want the RV or not. If not.....im coming truck only, Saturday only and stay till the wee hours and go home.

Well using 'DuallyDogs' known baseline number from other dynos.... the correction figure appears to be 20%. That puts me at a more realistic number of 585 HP. Guess my boost leak (only pulled 55 psi) is hurting my numbers a bit. Did anyone notice if my smoke cleared up somewhere into the run?

Using 20% less...where does that put everyone?

Sorry guys, that the dyno was not more accurate! Last time we were there it was reading w/i 5% of previous Dynojet run. But, like said above, does give some of you bragging rights. :D I'd use my numbers too..... but nobody with any knowledge would believe them!

Are you doing 20% off of the corrected value, or 20% off the uncorrected value? My CF was 5% on the graph.

So my Smarty/M6 only run that was 460 corrected, would be 438 uncorrected using the 5% CF from the graph. Using the 20% number it would fall to 383. I'd be more inclined to believe the 5% number as my previous numbers were 423 in my old configuration.

Smarty (65hp) + TST (120hp) + DD2 (90hp) = 275hp extra
Smarty (65hp) + Mach 6 (220hp) = 285hp extra

So I'd think that a Smarty/M6 run would compare to my Smarty/TST/DD2 run, which were close at 423 vs 438.

The other way I figured it was my old baseline run was always to do a Smarty/DD2 run which was consistently in the 344-350 range (corrected). This usually gave me a pretty good indication of where the dyno was reading.

In that case, I was running 155 extra hp and would net 348 (~13% loss). My Smarty run was with 285 extra hp and came up to 438 uncorrected (~18% loss) or 460 corrected (~13% loss).Of course the other variable is the SO pump.

As for my runs with the TST, I have no idea how accurate they are. I was working the skinny pedal with my right foot trying to keep boost under 45psi, so consistency on those runs could be questionable.

The 5% uncorrected would take your 460 up to like 485 hp, not down...... No?
Conditions were above STP, no below.

I was using 20% of uncorrected.

My assumption was that the number listed on the graph was already the corrected number (because I only had one max number). So to go back to uncorrected, I had to remove the factor (in other words, divide by 1.05 to remove the 5%).

The number should have corrected up to account for the hot weather based on the assumption that STP is a more optimal temp than 90* (or whatever it was in the shop). Maybe I'm thinking of this bass-ackwards. But it makes sense to me. The only time I would expect a corrected lower than an uncorrected is when you are running cool air and optimal pressure.

EDIT: One other point I forgot earlier, all my runs were made in 5th (1:1). I didn't make any runs in 6th as I knew 6th would load up hard and shoot boost around past 50psi.

RowJ
09-08-2008, 10:02 AM
Yup! My mistake. Correction Factor is a multiplier.

But what has me confused is Bobby told me the Dyno said 731 hp on my best run. My Correction Factor was 1.00. Sheet should have read same as Dyno? But my sheet shows best run was 712 HP.
Maybe I mis heard him?? Anyone else remember what my numbers were on the dyno.... before they printed out the sheets?

RJ

RowJ
09-08-2008, 12:00 PM
RPM's on my print out were off. I did my runs from 1800 rpm to 3200 rpm. Graph shows from 1800 to 2800 rpm? Could the software comdensing the rpm spread account for over reading the power??
Wish I better understood Dynos. I spent an hr once on the web but could not find the real info on how an inertial dyno reads power. Drum acceleration I assume but not sure. Anyone?

RJ

AggieJustin
09-08-2008, 12:55 PM
I'm lost on that one too. Not sure how that dyno can show engine RPM when it doesn't have a way to determine it. If we used the optical pickup, I can see that. But in order to calculate engine speed based on ground speed, they would have to know tire size, rear end ratio and transmission gearing.

That said, I've got one run that shows I made max power and torque at 4000. It was a bad run, but no idea how it ended up with that number. Most of the other runs are close to the range I was running (1600-3000)

RowJ

Good point! My 35" tires would account for lower RPM's...assuming generic software.
Just have to stick with Dynojets...I guess.

I was reading up on them this morning and Dynocoms have optical pick-ups for measuring engine speed. Not sure why they don't use one.

I did notice when I watched a few runs from the computer that engine speed didn't display until they started sampling. So it must be calculated based on sampled parameters. But I still don't get how it could vary so widely for a single vehicle.

My baseline dyno's for the 3 times I've measured it on the rollers are respectively 275 (Halthom City), 270 (Era), and 340 (Burleson). Remember I dynoed 440 corrected. All of those are just running a Quad intake, maybe the AFE dry filter added another 70hp.

Thanks to Rowland for deciding to put together the dyno event before Alvarado. It was perfect timing for me to get a 500hp dyno sheet so I could win the 500 HP club hitch cover from NADM at the sled pull.

Here's a picture of it that's not tarnished by my ugly mug standing behind it (because I know there are a couple of those floating around). :D

NADM came down for the sled pulls. They brought some stuff to be given away during the pulls. They were giving that hitch cover to whoever could bring a dyno sheet closest to 500HP. I had my sheet from that morning showing 509, plus I was probably the only person there actually carrying a dyno sheet (not counting the other four guys from that morning), so I won it.
