Twin Turbo Install
I have the BD Super B and am looking to upgrade to the BD "Towing Twins", but the local shop wants 10 hours to do the install, is that about right? I just wanted some expert advice on install time, at $90 an hour I feel like I'm getting taken.

8-10hrs is about right for the time to take to install twins with just one person, depending on the level of detail or extra work required for that specific application. However, ususally you can get a "flat rate" for the install that is less than the hourly rate.

Winner winner chicken dinner!
But 10 hrs @ $90 an hour is way high. No way a shop that has done turbo installs would take 10hrs, and if they did I would run away. As stated look around for someone to give you a flat rate or do it yourself its not that bad with a helper.

550-700 $ would be a lot closer, but it really does depend on how the bits & pieces get done.
Just swapping the parts is much faster than making a turn-key sanitary installation, complete with dialed-in turbos and test data.
We let the customers decide how much they want done.
Remember, you can get Fast, Cheap & Good... feel free to pick any two!

I guess 10 hours is about right for the install, there really isn't very many other diesel shops in my area. These guys have done a lot of these and I just thought they would have the install down, I have had work done in the U.S. just to save on the shop cost. The owner is giving me a deal on the second turbo for the twins, he upgraded to the race set. I guess I could pick his turbo up and head south for the install, it's just a bit of a pain if anything goes wrong. Thanks for the info.

You know and i know that its not a 900 buck job. See if you can talk them down or if they go by the hour tell them you will stick around and supervise the timing.

I just got a reply back from the shop and the 10 hour shop time remains. It's really too bad the guy is a great guy and will always answer questions and really knows his stuff, I just don't like the prices. I know of a diesel shop on the Oregon coast that has a shop rate of half, maybe it's time for a road trip.

I try to do most of the work myself, on the occasion that I can't because of time, tools or expertise, I'll take it to my mechanic.
Now he'll quote me a figure "x amount of hours @ y shop rate = $$", it is always conservative and if it takes him longer, he never charges me.

I have a friend who is quite good with mechanics, is this upgrade something we could take on, or do I need special tools for the job. Would be nice to save the $900 in labor.
