For the Twin DIYer's

My goal is a set of twins that can tow heavy without having to watch the EGT gauge. MY questions is what combo of twins will work as I want to get the smaller turbo now, to swap out my Hy, and then later on as I gather more pieces and $, build the twin setup my self, as I want to keep the auto tranny cooler. I'm dead bored with my HY now and wanna upgrade the turbo, then some Mach 4's and then the 2nd turbo followed by a TST stack since I already have a Smarty. Any help or insight would be appreciated.

The PDR towing twins uses a HX-35 with a 14cm exhaust housing for fast spooling and a HTB3. Its set at 50psi and is good for 450hp-550hp. You can just get a 14cm wastegated housing for $415 on the PDR. Then you can get the big one later. The 14cm will lower your EGT's and will bolt tight to your stock turbo. You will need to use the back plate off or your stock housing so it will bolt to your exhaust. Thats the way I would do it. Check out Piers Diesel Research. If you go with the HX-40 or bigger you will have to have a new Down Pipe and other things.

For the money you'd have into a 35 I'd skip it and got with a S300 variant. I'd go with a 62/12 with a 71mm exhaust wheel. This turbo alone would support the power you are talking about. I've had 3 sets of twins and can tell you they're not all they are cracked up to be. There is a lot more maintenance and it seems like you're always chasing down a boost leak. I'm not trying to deter you from building twins because its an experience, but trouble free they are not.

Would a 62/12 support towing heavy? I dont do it alot but need the ability to do so. What I dont like about twins is the real estate they take up. 450-500 is my overall goal.

Very true

on the maintainance... I have the twins, and i love them for towing. I personally run a 35/14 over an S400, but it seems that the HX35 is rather inefficient. But they make for a sweet towing setup. I have towed 20K with them no problem whatsoever, once they get lit, the power comes on smooth and steady and it seems is always on tap when u have twins... The upside to them is pretty darn cool... but their maintainance as stated is rather high...

something of an s300 or a 62/14 at largest will work awesome with twins...

I've been running twins for 4 years. How long do you have to run a set before all the maintainence starts. What exactly needs attention?

ive had a bunch of boost leaks,

and exhaust leaks from the gasket at the manifold a time or two.ive also needed to retighten the bolts a few times from engine vibration... guess thats about it.. Fix it and forget it for a while... Although i do need some new IC boots... not sure if loctite is up to the task of manifold bolts to the turbo...

I am sorry to hear that it takes so little to turn you guys away from twins. Personally, the ability to use the hp without seeing the pyrometer bottom out is worth checking to make sure 24 bolts and nuts, and 11 clamps are tight.

I don't think the 12 is offered or compatible with the 71mm wheel. I think the 12 is limited to the 65mm wheel.

You could buy the BD Super B as a single for now and then buy the rest of the kit for the Super B twins down the road. Very good towing set up. Spools great and with Mach 4's you could do away with your egt gauge. I ran BD's 155 hp injectors with the BD twins with great success towing 15+k. Never would get hotter than 1150 up grades.

You can get a 12 or 14cm with a cast iron housing from II or 13 or 16cm with a SS housing or a 14cm CI from HTT with the 71mm pin wheel

Yes, a 12 or 14cm with a cast iron housing from II in the Phat shaft series
( 65mm pin wheel) not in the SPS version 71mm pin wheel, and as far as HTT goes their 13,14,and 16..... are not 12cm. The HTB2 series that has a 12cm housing has a 65mm pin wheel and the smallest housing on the HTT 71 series is 13cm IIRC.

I thought about that later on. II doesn't offer a 12cm with the 71 wheel. Dont know what I was thinking.

I agree Ron. I've had to do very little to my twins. I think having a good lower turbo mount is very important. It keeps the weight of the lower turbo off of the manifold.

i love my twins, i have had some leaks but not a big deal. i dont have a mount on my bottom charger, when itook all the piping off to fix some leaks i left the bottom charger on hooked up to the down pipe and it stay there fine, didnt move. if everythign else is supported right then i guess it would be just added insurance, but after i saw how mine is being held up i personnally dont think it is critical.
