I see there are a bunch of HX40s for sale in the classifieds, what are all of you upgrading to from the HX40, and why?

Re:what turbo are you gettin?

Lance,
Some people are out growing their HX40's some are worried about reliability.
HX40's really like the 400-500hp area.
But, it is a stepping stone to a larger single (or tougher), or a twin setup.

Re:what turbo are you gettin?

Here's the current hit list, in order of priority:

1. JR's HX55-16 hybrid. All indications are that spool up is the same as my stock HX40-16. Rocketship spooling starts @ 1750.

2. B1-B-EX4 or KSB1-B-EX4.

Re:what turbo are you gettin?

This is the first I've heard of Jr's turbo. Does anyone have any more info? From the sounds if it I would be better of getting one of those vs. a PDR 40

Thanks

The best bet for details is to PM J.R. I am running one and am very pleased with it. It is a small 55 hybrid with a 16cm wastegated HX40 exhaust housing that has been modified to accept the bigger turbine wheel. It bolts to a stock exhaust maniforld and uses an HX40 downpipe. I have not dynoed my truck sinse the last round of upgrades but plan on doing that soon. With the wastegate set at 44psi I reduce the smoke with my set up to a light haze when its fully lit.

In 4th gear when it hits 44psi the back end kind of wiggles sideways a little bit. ;D

Re:what turbo are you gettin?

I swapped out my PDR 40 for the B1KS with no regrets its a great working turbo. The 40 just was outgrown by my fueling needs the 40 are pretty nice turbo's.

Re:what turbo are you gettin?

Somewhere around the begining of next week I will be going from a PDR 40/18 to a Little '55 from J.R. I'm hoping to pick up a few pounds of boost, and have lots of cool air, with better spoolup.
I'l report back with what I find.

My 12V is using two extremely hybrided turbo's from J.R. also. My Big Turbo flows almost as much as a Big Brother, mu little turbo easily outflows a B-1. I can't tell ya what they are, but suffice to say, they make an easy 100PSI, and start spooling at 1,700RPM.

Right now, the leading contender is a KSB-1B....

Re:what turbo are you gettin?

if I was to get this hybrid 55 from JR, would the bosch 370 injectors be enough? what else would I need for this to work well?

Call, PM, or Email JR he will be able to tell you exactly what you need to run that turbo. Or he can tell you which turbo will suit your truck. Whenever I finally get the $$ for a turbo (Clutch comes first! ) I'm getting a turbo from JR. He has had the best priced options I've seen yet!

Lance, it should be, with a smaller Exh. housing,, say a 14cm.

The '55 is much tougher than a '40. I think it would be wise to move up to a #10 plate (or more aggressive), and a 4K GSK, along with the 60# Valve springs if you haven't allready, O-ringing the head would be a wise move, but not nessasary.

With a stock plate full forwards, the B-1 will work fine, even an HX-40 would suffice. My 24V made 457RWHP and 950RWTQ for 20,000 miles with a PDR HX-40 with an 18 cm housing. I have now removed it, rebuilt it, and am trying to sell it. The HX-55 is a good turbo for trucks pushing 500RWHP and above. It will work on lower HP trucks, but you won't utilize it's full potential.
I hope this helps.
