Turbo Whistle

Hey, I asked in the other forum but I was wondering if I could get a better response here. I just bought my truck and its a 98 24 Valve CTD and the turbo whistles really really loud. Now I am pretty sure its not normal because I have driven other diesels and they didnt sound like this. I think its the turbo anyway, I am not sure. It only does it when I am going forward and press on the gas pretty good. If I sit there in park and rev the motor up you dont hear it. Could it be a hole in the exhaust or something or is it the turbo? Thanks

Re:Turbo Whistle

Probably from the turbo. Someone may have pulled the silencer ring out of it. The ring is a piece that fits inside the turbo where the intake boot goes and it quiets down the sound of the air coming in. If it is gone it won't hurt anything, most people around here pull it off because we like to hear the sweet music coming from that turbo.

John

Re:Turbo Whistle

I checked and the ring is definately in there. The sound is more of like a squealing than a whistle. Like when I rev the engine up I can hear the turbo whistle but as soon as put it in gear and go this annoying sound happens!
Re:Turbo Whistle

It may not be the turbo then, if the noise only starts when you put it in gear. From what I have read in your posts, I'm leaning towards something having come loose in the engine compartment and rubbing/ being rubbed by a moving part, such as a belt or pulley. When you put it in gear the toorque of the engine will rock it a little in the engine compartment and if it is close to something in there it might be rocking enough to touch it, in gear.

Set the parking brake, chock the wheels, and put it in gear, then look under the hood to see if you can determine where the noise is coming from.

If it was coming from the turbo it could be bearings, but these would make noise all the time, and wouldn't do it for long because a bearing problem in a turbo is gonna blow the turbo in a short time.

Chris

Re:Turbo Whistle

I'm sorry I must not have made myself clear. It only makes the noise when its in gear and your driving down the road an the rpm's are almost at 2000 or above. So like If I am just crusin at like 1500 rpms its not there so thats why i think its the turbo. Could there be a leak somewhere?

That sounds like it could be the dreaded exhaust drone.

Do you still have a muffler?
Resonator?

Some straight piped trucks experience this, and solve it by putting a straight through free flowing muffler on it, cures the drone but doesn't kill a lot of the sound.

phox

The sound of the noise may be described as a whistle, a squeal, a howl, a moan, or a gurgle. The noise will be more noticeable as engine temperature increases. The noise will most often occur when the warm engine is operated between 1,500 and 2,200 engine rpm's. The noise is usually heard in the cab, louder on the passenger side or seems to come from the dash vents.

The noise may be caused by the coolant supply hose connector. Re:Turbo Whistle

Awesome, thanks man. That sounds exactly like my problem. Do you happen to have the link of where I can get that connector? Thanks again.

Re:Turbo Whistle

So I decided to clamp the hose and see if that would help and it didnt because it still whistles, so I am thinking its not that hose connector that I ordered. If its not too much trouble I think I will install it anyway. Any other ideas?

Re:Turbo Whistle

Check the clamps on the intercooler tubing, I forgot to tighten mine up after I put in the boost gauge and it was way louder. Sounded like a jet in the cab. I have no silencer ring but I didn' notice much when I pulled it out. On that note check all the bolts and clamps from the turbo to the intake. Mine didn't make the noise until it had enough load to build good boost. sitting still it wouldn't do it but smash the peddle in gear and dang it was loud.

Re:Turbo Whistle

Well guys I finally got time to change the coolant hose connector and it didnt do anything. So I am finally gonna have to take it into the garage. I am gonna try one more thing tomorrow and thats to take a gasket out of the heater hose. I'll let you know if it works and if I ever figure it out. Thanks for all the input.

Re:Turbo Whistle

Hey guys, just an update. I changed the heater hose connecter, lengthened the heater hose and moved it up two ports. I read that would solve it and $30 later no luck. Took it to two garages and they had no idea what it was. So finally I read to check the intercooler hoses. I noticed the boot from the turbo to another thing that went to the intercooler was kinda loose so I took it off and put it on more and tightened it, still expecting the whistle but I said hey why not. So I took it out after that an nomore of that annoying whistling, just the normal turbo whistle and I LOVE IT!!! I feel like an idiot for not checking that earlier but hey I guess thats how you learn. So if you guys have that problem, check those hoses first!!! Thanks for all of your help and ideas.
