Turbo Upgrade?
I am looking at upgrading my stock turbo and was wondering if anyone has input on which one to go with. I am looking at lowering my egt's when pulling a 5th wheel trailer. I have been looking at the BD super b single or the ATs Aurora 3000 or something else. Any input would be appreciated.

i had a sps66 on my last truck, it was an 03, HO, and before that turbo, i had replaced the stock turbo with the bd.
that said the bd wasn't enough turbo for my growing mods, and the 66 didn't like pulling a heavy trailer, cause it would bark.
this truck i have now has a sps62 and at first i though it was going to be too small, but man i like this turbo, for the mods i have right now, which is a edge juice and edge ez.i feel this is the ticket if you tow and it keeps the egt's in check, don't see much more then 1100.ever.
i know there are lots of good turbos out there, and if your like me the mods keep growing, but right now i like this turbo, it plain works good. i have now invested in a twin set up, that uses the sps62 turbo.i don't have that kit yet, but my mods are growing again.

The big thing about turbos is what you are doing with it. A big dyno number or 1/4 mile time does not mean a good towing rig. I am no turbo expert but one person may love a turbo and another will hate it because their needs are not the same.

I agree with JoshBrown. I had a 64/65/13ss from htt and everyone at the time said it would spool great when towing and cool well. Some said it would even spool faster than stock. This was not the case at all for me. It spooled fairly slow and would puke tons of black smoke until it spooled, but whne it did spool hold on. I only had it for about a week and sold it. If I had to do it over I would have gotten a 62 for sure.

i have one 06 truck that only tows a 5th wheel, with the mods in my signature for better mileage.gcw is 19,700 lbs i thought i could do better with a turbo change i let ats talk me into a a3000 this was a total disaster and had to go back to the he351. just recently i installed a htt 62 65 13 ss and ss manifold and installed a heat blanket on each. the theory was it would keep the gas hot and not condense until it passed through the turbo. it looks promising but will not know until this winter when i take a 6,000 trip. i am seeing a little more black smoke than i like on take off. next year i might try a 12 housing and compare

i think a 62/12 is legit for a 80% towing usage....i wouldnt change my 62/65/13ss out if i started towing as its worked well the few times i've towed, but had i bough a turbo specifically for towing, i'd probably go with a /12 just to minimize the slight lag / smoke....that and i'd have to turn it down from kill that i use all the time.

Call HTT, they have great customer service. Tell them your mods, if any, and what you are doing with your truck, they will put you in a turbo to fit your needs. Get the P/N for it, and call Lary in the DTR store, he can get you a better price.
Spend the extra dough on the SS exhaust housing, and get that sucker polished.

I ran a 62/65/12 for a year.It is a great towing turbo for a lightly modded truck.Definitely stay with a 62/65. I really can't see there being that much difference in spool up between the 12 or 13ss ex. housing(except for much better exhaust flow with the 13ss).

Jason is dead on ^^, the HTT 62/65 is the choice for towing upgrades. I personally would be sticking to a ss housing, it does flow better but my concern is high heat resistance when towing. The HTT ss housings are known to handle 1400*+ with no problems because of the improved heatsink. But I've never seen mine hit 1400*, towing it will not pass 1350*, even if I'm to the floor.

Here here, I also bought a turbo just for towing...I have a gross weight of 37k# I bought the HTT 62/13/65ss I love it, once it spools...yes, it moves very very well, I could tell a dif between it and stock.

I got the HTT 62/65/14--I didn't want to wait for the BO'd 13ss.
I just pulled my 11K# 5ver from Las Vegas to Denver. It didn't get over 1250, and that was pulling the summit at 11,000 feet.
62/65 is definitely the towing choice.
Towing on the flats at 75 mph, I was running about 1050-1100 and I averaged 11 mpg (which is up from the 9.5-10.5 mpg I was getting [at 75 mph]).
It does spool a little slower than stock. I'm glad I had Dave put in the looser TC (15 cut-left?). I did get an exhaust manifold to help and I think I will get a cam later. The cam should bring the spool back to stock levels.
