I know that some of you are very excited with the new turbo technology which has the potential to increase performance and fuel milage. I was at KW the other day getting some updates on info and was involved in a discussion about the new cleaner engine designs. It should be note that Cat has opted for twin turbos to accomplish this and passed the test. Detroit Diesel's variable ratio adjustable impeller design (similar to Ford/IH) has had high rates of failure due the inability to control temperature (cooling) of the multiple moving surfaces within the turbo. In all instances including Cummins, hot shut down temps and excessive EGT's are more dangerous than ever and the cost of failure due to more complicated designs will sharply rise. Just some food for thought before jumping in and spending hoards of cash until some of the engineering bugs have been worked out. PK

I presume you are speaking of the VGT turbos now being supplied on a few of the Cummins model engines like the ISX. I agree that they will need some time to work out the bugs; maybe 4 or 5 years down the road they will be a great addition to the market, but I will certainly give it some time to hash out. Thanks for the info.

A buddy of mine his son has his own HD mech shop built himself a kenworth from the ground up engine of choice was a 3406A to start ,balanced crank, rods to pistons, lowered compression and cc pistons ,twin turbos polished housings and balanced. flowed injectors,6inch exhaust straghit pipe[ not very loud] runs about 70 lbs boast. pulling loaded 48 foot trailer,mind you not to stuff your foot into it ,can get 9 miles to gallon on hiway. Man this thing has bottom end torque like I have never seen before , I use to run a KT450 cummins fueled that put 580hp to the ground. I think this think does a better job .He has not had it dyno yet but I guess it would be at around 600+
