Turbo Timer vs. Dodge Remote Start
I had a very nice remote start/alarm system on my Ford where I could start or shut down the truck within a 1/4 mile. I was the turbo timer, before getting out of the truck, I would look at EGT's and then shut it off from inside of a building. I pulled the system from the Ford before selling it to install in the Dodge, but Dodge is telling me that only their remote start will work on the truck ($650 ).
I'm not sure which options are good ones . . 1) Don't be cheap and buy the Dodge remote start system, 2) Might learn that my $500 system from Circut City will work fine . . .install that (guys from CC were not sure), 3) give up on the remote start concept, and just get a turbo timer for $120 . . .I would choose this option, but I would like one that runs for 12 min or more (story behind this, but this post is already too long) Ideas?

Any remote start will work in the truck. Many new systems have a short run turbo timer, mine can do 1,3, or 5 minutes, it works by pressing 2 buttons on the remote though, it not automatic like a turbo timer.

the only thing that comes to my mind for them to have reasoning in saying this is... if the chip in key system has to be bypassed for the remote start set-up to work... if this has to be done and the truck ever get stolen... and insurance finds out the system was bypassed... they might not want to pay for a new truck... i'm not sure if it has to be bypassed or not though.... but i think it might for a remote start since a key is not present

back when i bought my truck, it only had one key, and had a remote start on it. i love the remote start, with our wheather, works mint.
i had to get a second key when i bought it,and i thought about how that all works. when i got the key, they had to program it to my system, and then they try it to make sure the truck will not start , blank key but cut, then check for start, programmed. the system still works.
i am not sure how that all works together, it must by pass something when the starter function is pressed.mine will run for 10 mins, then shut itself down, and the doors stay locked. if the doors are unlocked at the time of starting, they will lock.
i have no idea what make this one is, might be factory might not.
i am not sure how this is going to work with my TST cool down either, still trying to get that info from somebody who knows more then me.

there is a procedure to bypass the Sentry "chip in key". it has to do with measuring the inductance of the key and then adding a resistor to the ignition system. Dont have the exacts on it, but i know there is a way around it.

Whats the difference between the Sentry key/non?
And how easy is the installation etc?
Does it have a cool down timer too?
Cant find any info on mopar's site about the remote start...
Id like to go with the factory remote system for the price, but not sure if it is as involved as any other alarm installation.(In that case id go with an aftermarket alarm)
If its plug-n-play ill go with the mopar setup.

The Mopar remote start is an Audiovox/Code Alarm stand alone remote starter with a prewired harness so the mechanics can figure out how to put it in, and they usually still screw it up.
I'd put the Viper back in, it will work with the truck. You will need a bypass for the sentry key, either an universal bypass which keeps an OEM key in a unit that sends the signal to the truck only when remote started, or if your local shop has one the same type of system that has a chip in it and does not need an OEM key. The Mopar system has the same interface for the Sentry key, if your vehicle has the sentry key you buy the extra module and it installs the same way an aftermarket one would. The Viper is a better system that will give you alot more options and flexibility.

Thanks bbhz . . . . my only concern is if the guys at CC can install it without messing it up. I like the Viper system and would like to put it back in. With installation, the Mopar is about $630 . . . I can have the Viper re-installed for $250. I do a lot of work on my own truck, but not real excited about installing the alarm/remote start system.

We'll see. Dropped it off today. On the phone they told me it was a 3hr. install. After they had it for an hour, they told me it would take 8 hrs. Good thing I'm not paying by the hour. The guy seems like he knows what he is doing . . . I'll know tomorrow
