Turbo test

Is there any way I can test my turbo without taking it in? It does not seem to be working any more, the guage seems to be dead as well.

Have you checked all the charge-air tubing boots for splits, ect?

No I have not, I should add that my intercooler is unraveling like a button thread, a real mess it seems and they don't make them anymore

What do you mean not working? Could easily be the gauge or a kink in the line or something. I'm guessing your banks gauges are pretty old since banks hasn't made stuff for our trucks in 10 years.

If it runs and is driveable and not making noise... It's working....

You can however remove the intake tube and Check for play in the compressor wheel....and see if the wheel is rubbing the housing

If your intercooler is falling apart then thats where you boost leak is. Which is not letting boost to the engine which is effecting performance and therefore no boost is registering at the Intake manifold......

Stock intercoolers are everywhere as people modify and upgrade to bigger and better Intercoolers.

The gauges are Isspro, but they have been in there ahwile, I dont get any boost, no extra power for the engine.
Where would someone find an IC ? I just kind of figured the junk yard ones must be ready to come apart, judging from the shape of mine, maybe a low mileage wreck.

Only when it is cold. Maybe a little when I get on it on the freeway.

Well I figured out the intercooler is fine, there is some sideways play in the impeller shaft, i want ti guess about 1/16 of an inch. The impeller spins ok with my finger. What else could go wrong ? Can I replace the bearing to eliminate the play or is there more to it.

check the line on your boost gauge for kinks or breaks. that gauge should read something, they hardly ever quit as they are mechanical.

No air coming into the compressor via the filter, (if it's plugged up solid with dust for instance) means no air going through your IC etc etc.
Are there any signs of wear or any flakes of metal around the inlet of the compressor housing? A 1/16" sounds like a lot to me and I'm wondering if you've taken some metal off the compressor blades. Some pics would help!

The fuel filter can effect everything by not letting the engine get sufficient amount of fuel. ....without fuel you don't make boost due to the AFC system in the VE pump.

change your fuel filter....and prime it (fill it up) with some DieselKleen in the white botttle

Could be;
Fuel filter
Air filter
Intercooler leaks
intercooler boot leaks
manifold gasket leak (exhaust or intake)
turbo gasket leak
damaged afc boost tube
boost gauge line leak
weak/non working lift pump
loose valve lash

Many things it can be.
