Turbo Stopped

I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 Turbo diesel with 205,000 km or a little over 125,000 miles. for the first couple years it was used to haul alot of weight in the box. For the last 18 months it has had light usuage as far as weight carried and distance travelled. On a 90 mile trip home the turbo stopped part way up a hill. I was accellerating up a hill and all of a suddening I lost power. Now when the turbo should kick in, it doesn't. Did I blow the turbo? If I did should I replace it with stock or is there an aftermarket that is better?

Re:Turbo Stopped

Sounds like it could be finished...have you inspected it?? What do the impeller blades look like?? How much, if any side to side or axial play is there?? Does it spin freely?? It may be just that your inlet hose came off.....

There are upgraded turbos available, of course, they will cost more money than the stock turbo and to take full advantage you will need to have a better intake, larger than stock exhaust, and increase fuel.

Re:Turbo Stopped

Are you sure the turbo stopped? Or did the boost just drop?

The first thing I would do is check to see if a boot came off or there is a big leak in the intercooler.

Good luck,

George

Good advice. Check the small stuff first. Is it possible that the turbo is sticking instead of actually frozen? If it towed heavy on dino oil, odds are that the turbo coked up. If the turbo will spin, try an oil change to synthetic (a REAL syn, like Redline, amsoil, Royal purple, Delvac 1 or similar). The synthetics are known to free turbos that are stuck by cleaning them out.

Of course, it might just be toast after all.

Re:Turbo Stopped

After closer inspection, the clamp holding the rubber boot on the intake had losened oir slipped and the connection had become disconnected. Once it was reconnected everything was fine. Saved me some money.

Thanks for all the help.
