Turbo sound "flutter/sputtering"

Ok, a few weeks ago I installed the complete monster exhaust that replaces the cast elbow downpipe and all. I now have this "flutter/sputtering" noise while accelerating fairly hard. Not always but seems to always be there if I start to get over say 15-18lbs of boost. I can actually see the boost gage fluctuate some very quickly while the noise is present.

I am hoping this is normal and that I can now hear it because the heavy cast elbow is gone and the exhaust is free flowing.
Is this correct or do I need to get it looked at. Truck runs great, just a wierd noise.

thanks

Sounds like surge...no biggie. Seems hard to believe that you have it with a stock turbo. Get a free flowing intake...Scotty's Ram Air III and see if balance returns your turbo to a happy state...

Thanks for the reply. One other thing and I may be digging way too far into this but, before the flutter, my truck always seemed to have a little "pinging/clatter" under load right before it shifted and I think this noise is also happening at that same time. New to diesels so I am probably worrying too much. just love the truck.

I have been doing alot of reading and it seems there are many possible causes for this sound. Turbo surge, stall, wastegate not functioning properly. I will keep an eye on it.

thanks again

My truck had what I would call a misfire on medium acceleration after it was fully warmed up. It was worse after I removed the muffler and installed my AFE & torque tube. I had the re flash today and drove about fifty miles afterward and it seems to be gone. The truck didn't just make a sound, but actually sputtered like a gas engine with a bad plug wire. I thought that sounded kind of like what your experiencing

I think mine is different. the truck runs perfect and smooth. It is really kind of hard to explain without hearing it. It has something to do with the air and trubo, that I am pretty convinced of but just not sure why it is doing it.

thanks for your input.
take care

I have the Banks 4" downpipe as well, and while I don't have any "flutter", I do have an irritating howl ever since I put it on. This howl is only present at low boost conditions, usually below 7 or 8 lbs. I have tried everything to get rid of it from totally replacing my intake, to adding a TAG III, to making exhaust mods. Nothing has helped. The only constant left in the equation is the Banks 4" downpipe.

I recently picked up an 04.5 4" cast elbow and downpipe to replace the Banks downpipe in hopes that would get rid of the howl as it is really irritating. Unfortunately, the cast elbow wouldn't fit. My ATS manifold hugs the engine a little closer than stock as does my B1 turbo. Between the two of them, I lost a little clearance between the turbo and firewall. I need about another inch. There is about 2 & 1/2 inches back there, but my transmission fluid dipstick runs right through the middle of it. I may take the exhaust loose again and give it another shot. I wonder if I can just bend the dipstick back out of the way a little to get the clearance I need? Anyone know what holds the dipstick in the top of the tranny? It looks like it is just a press fit with no retaining bolt or anything to hold it in place. Should be easy enough. Thoughts?
