Turbo rebuild

My turbo is making a horrific noise under boost. There is alot of play in the shaft but not enough for the blades to touch the housing. I feel a little stupid asking this but I have been searching for hours now and cannot find it . What turbo does the 2004.5 turbos have? I have found information saying it has the HY35, or HX35 or a HE351. I have looked all over the turbo and can only find HOLSET 2 on it. No other numbers that i can see while the turbo is on the truck, and the holset webpage lies when they say there is a data plate on every turbo.

If you talk to a Cummins shop with the engine serial #, they will tell you exactly what you have.

Sir - just a thought and you may be a person who does everything right but about longevity here - wondering if people recognize that one has to idle down before they shut off the engine no matter what or where you are. And you have to warm up the engine for a couple of minutes when starting cold. Doing these things will drastically extend the life of your turbo. I shut mine down always at 290*F on the EGT monitor. This is why diesels are not for everyone - the others are waaaaayyyyy too impatient. People have always run down turbo diesels simply because they do not understand how the engine works.

Sorry, don't agree with that one. . . Start engine and once you have oil pressure, drive easily till it warms up.

Every Holset I have ever seen or dealt with has a tag on it. You may have to remove the turbo to actually see the tag. The tags do come off sometimes with age but for the most part are always there.

If for some reason the tag is missing then this advice is your next best option.

You have an HE351 since your truck is an 04.5.

when i went to the dealership the only information they can give me from the build sheet is PN# R5086863AA. when i do a search for it, it comes up as a bunch a Russian parts a 1 webpage has it labeled as a turbo.

I tried to look everywhere i could for that tag, but cannot see it while its installed. But thanks for the info, it looks like i have to go to a cummins shop to get a rebuild kit. There isnt any on ebay.

*edit* doing more research, i have found some more info saying that the HE351 is the same thing internally as the HY35. If someone was going to rebuild a HE351 to use the HY35 rebuild kit. But everything i could find was what other people have heard, i couldnt find 1 thing about someone who actually used a HY35 rebuild kit for a HE351
