Hi guys,
there are obviously lots of turbo options out there, but I was wondering if there is a sticky or some info that would have a quick run down of the more common turbos and some application info (towing, race only, pulling, daily driver, etc). I have heard alot about HX35s, 14cm exhaust housings, 12cm housings, hybrids built out of the stock 1st gen turbos... I'm just wondering what would be a good upgrade from stock that will be reasonable. Possibly something that can be found used off another year truck or? I'm looking for a turbo that can be spooled with a turned up stock pump, and maybe some injectors down the road.

HX35 is a good upgrade from stock. If you keep the stock turbo putting on a smaller exhaust housing will help greatly. I have an H1C with the Stage IV kit from HTT and its great, probably would be better if I didn't have an auto.

Is the HX35 the turbo found on the later 94-98 trucks stock?

Most of the time yes. Early 94 trucks sometimes came with wh1c turbo's i think. But were replaced with HX35s by dealers.

ok I am new here I just bought by 92ctd is this kit better that just replacing the housing?



got it off the HTT website a few months ago. Wasn't really for Non I/C trucks but I just got a reducer on it and it works fine.

Yes, by just replacing the exhaust housing with a smaller one you are making spool up quicker. like a 16cm housing will allow boost to go into the engine alot faster at the push of the pedal.

The HTT stage IV kit is a upgrade COMPRESSOR which is actually the INLET of the turbo where the compressor wheel is. Stock is a 56mm or 54mm if your truck is non intercooled. Upgrade is 60mm. This is actually the part that the exhaust gas is used to spin and push air into the engine.

So the upgrade allows more air (boost) into the engine. = more horsepower :D and lower Exhaust gas temperatures (which means more fuel can be added)

A upgrade EXHAUST housing like a 16cm or 14cm will just improve your spool up of the turbo, helping driveability and response.

The Stage IV won't add more boost unless you add more fuel. I am still in the 20 range cause I haven't added much fuel yet but there was a video of a guy driving around after his upgrade and it would shoot up to 40psi pretty quick.

the upgrade is not for more boost its for more efficaint air flow or cooler air, which means you can add more fuel to make more boost, but i ran 40+ psi out of the stocker, it was all hot air but it was 40psi [duhhh] and with the 60mm upgrade i can still run 40psi but its not hot air.

So the kit doesn't come with the new housing? I was reading some of your mods and it said 16cm housing and stage IV kit? So if I need to do both do you have to specify that you need the stage IV kit for a 16cm housing. Sorry I know I am wearing you all out with stupid questions. thanks

When they say 16cm they are refering to the exhaust side. The HTT and other kits like them are for the compressor (intake) side. You can get a exhaust side any where from 12cm to 18.5cm and the 92 came stock with what they refer to as the "lagmaster" 21cm. I run a 18.5 (stock) on mine but am going to be putting a ported 12cm on so it spools up better.

So I need a new housing and the htt kit. If you had to pick one or the other which one would you do first? would you consider the 16cm to be the best all around size for moderate spool time and also not getting too hot since I do use my truck for pulling a trailer 90% of the time? sorry man I am still learning.

If you still have a 21 cm turbine housing, that needs to go away ASAP.

Are we talking an auto or a stick truck here?

Look on the back side of the exhaust housing were the exhaust pipe comes off. Cast into it there will be a number 18.5 or 21. If its a 21 it needs to go and I would recommend the 16 but if its a 18.5 keep it and see till after you upgrade the compressor side. 16 does make it spool a little quicker than the 18.5 but not much. My truck had the 18.5
