Turbo has developed play, now what to install...
The mighty ol' WH1C just developed some in and out play on the shaft within the last 400 miles, doesn't grind, but if I pull it out and try hard I can probably touch the housing, but haven't tried very hard. Now, the question is what to do...
1) I could buy a rebuild kit, and stage 3 kit from HT Turbo for about 450-500 bucks
2) Buy a used HX35 that's in good shape, and buy the stage 3 kit from HTT
3) Keep my eye out for a used HX40
Now, I would like to do #3, but I'm concerned about the spoolup. Will the 40 spool with a set of 370s about the same as the WH1C does with just the 10 plate? I am willing to accept a little lag, if it will keep the EGTs down, but I want to go somewhere when I put the foot down...
What is the difference in spoolup between the full HX40 and the hybrid? What about reliablity? I may be getting a little play money soon, and figure it's time to take care of the turbo now before it grenades on me!
Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

Not sure about the lag on the 35 vs the 40. I think a better question to ask yourself would be what power level you want to accomplish. If you think you'll outgrow the hybrid quickly, then go bigger.
BTW my local turbo shop says the hx35 can have up to .007" side-to-side end play on the whole shaft. Meaning you'd need to move both wheels at the same time in the same direction to measure true end-play.

What I want is something that will work well now, then down the road I can add a HT3B for twins. That's down the road. I want enough turbo to keep some 370s towable, then I'll do delivery valves and hopefully twins. I want to end up in the 450 HP area. The truck is a daily driver, I do a couple of sled pulls with it, and also might be plowing with it this winter. So there's a little more background info... I think the 40 is the ticket, I'm just concerned about the lag...

I put a Dodgezilla on my truck last week, there`s a post in the 1st gen section, so far I love it! Dunno how 2nd gen mods compare to 1st but I hear that POD injectors can flow more fuel than a set of 370`s if that means anything

HTT's Stage IV is nice, but you have to send the turbo to them. It's a 62 mm compressor vs. the 60 mm in the Stage III. I think rebuilding yours and putting the Stage III compressor on is the cheapest option. They also sell upgraded turbos on an exchange basis, that's how I did mine.
