turbo boost/whine at high rpm

when you rev my 24 valve with a load to about 2300rpm give or take a few besides the normal whistle it will start to give out a lower pitched whine that you can hear pretty clearly. i am not sure if its a leak or what, i did a quick visual check and feel of all the hoses for the turbo and saw/felt nothing out of the ordinary. i dont have a boost gauge so i couldnt tell you if its losing boost etc. any ideas what it could be? its only at 2300rpm and above when things are really hummin

the same thing just happened with my truck. its a loud low pitch in addition to the normal sound of the turbo right? bad news for mine. i checked the shaft and it has quite a bit of play and the fins and starting to rub on the housing. needless to say ive got another turbo coming in tuesday, and im driving it like an old lady. not letting it spool up. i probably shouldnt even be driving it, but i have no choice. hopefully this is not your problem, but it sounds just like mine. good luck.

I have driven many 24 valve trucks and all of them have a bit of turbo whine (more with an hx35) once the boost gets high,( usually with performance mods also) mine has had it since i bought it 4 years ago and i havent had a bit of trouble, still it wont hurt to pull the air cleaner hose and feel the shaft and check for play, it could be something like wire posted, without hearing it i cant say for sure.

while I was working in the mechanics shop in a local lumber yard we had our newest truck develope a squeel (like a balloon being stretched at the opening) when it was under a load. What that turned out to be was a pin sized hole in one of the rubber boots between the turbo and the after cooler.
I hope that it's not your turbo going bad. Hope this helps

Does it seem like you don't have the power you used to? I work on big rigs and with them at least if there's any problem with the turbo; be it a leak or vanes going out, there is a noticeable loss of power

i have not experienced any loss of power. im driving it like a baby until tomorrow. the fins are rubbing the housing and i know that aint good at all. both people that looked at it instantly said its on its way out. not taking any chances with mine and putting in a new one. its got front to back and side to side play. theres a little scraping noise on start up, then it goes away. the turbo im getting is an upgraded hx35 (14cm/60mm). anyone have that and if so, how does it perform? arent standard hx35's 12cm/45mm?

Yep. The turbo to manifold gasket was my issue. Shop was trying to get me back on the road quick and didn't replace the gasket. In the end $4 gasket fixed the noise.
