tst or smarty

Which is better. TST cr49 of smarty with 4.4 beta? The smarty is more powerful right? Also it won't drail the rail like the tst will would it? I think I am gonna sell my tst and get a smarty and stack it with the ez on #2 and get my fuel system etc..

blwnsmke,
Is your TST the older style? serial # <5000?

I have had the TST-R49 since early 2004 on mine and like it. I recently purchased the Smarty because I am adding DTT tranny and SilverBullet62 to my truck. I have read many posts were everyone is saying they work very well together. I wish my TST could use the newer software so I could play with the timing levels that the TST provides. I have been running just the Smarty for about a week and really like how it feels. It is a little hard to do a good comparision as it is cold and slippery this time of year in New England.

Good Luck...

So can't really tell which is stronger? The tst is suppose to be 190hp and the new beta is suppose to be 230hp..

They are really different animals. The Smarty is real strong right off idle. Really changes the way the truck reacts. Throttle reponse is awesome. Having the bult tranny is your advantage as the Tq management the the Smarty can control will allow your truck to use more of the power it is capable of. I can tell the truck is A LOT more powerful off idle but I cannot try to use it for fear of my stock transmission. Waiting for the parts to come in and that will change real soon. From all the posts I have read the Smarty will help the lowend and the TST is awesome for the topend. The roads this time of year the tires will just spin when trying to step on the throttle.

I will be using the TST and Smarty once tranny and turbo are on. I will probably play around with settings for SOTP comparison and then schedule a little dyno time to see which settings work the best. I am trying to get my truck to 20mpg and still have a truck that will move when I want it to.

I think the hard part for me is it sounds like the timing the Smarty can offer is better than the timing the TST uses. Where both of these devices mess with the timing it will take me some time to see what combination will work well.

Have you liked your TST? Ever dyno your truck with it? I only have dyno'd mine once after 1st adding the TST. 400hp/780tq with TST on 3/3. If I went any higher on the TST the fuel pressure would drop to 0. I have since added ths GDP-392 to correct the fuel supply but have not had the need to dyno again. The TST helped my mileage and made the truck a lot more fun to drive.

Are you going to do anything to your cp3? Could you feel a big difference when you put your fuel system on?

I am not planning on doing anything to the CP3 right away. I want to see how everything works. If I do anything I will be trying the DIY Relentless modification as I have read a few good posts about it. It looks like something I could handle in the garage.

The biggest thing I noticed after installing the GDP pump was that it now smokes on the higher settings as it is not running out of fuel now. I am sure it has a little more power up top because it would run out of fuel pressure on the higher settings. Not anymore. I had always thought before adding it that my truck did not smoke becasue of the small stock turbo but that was not the case.

The TST does basically nothing when stacked with the smarty BETA. Stacked with the regular programs, TST makes all the difference in the world, but I actually LOST 15hp on the dyno with the TST stacked. TST alone was 523 hp, TST + Beta was 546, Beta only was 561. TST nicest feature is that I made the 523 hp with NO smoke. Much easier to maintain rail pressure with the Beta program vs. TST also. Get the smarty with the 4.4 and wait for the Race 230 tune to come out.

jlibert,
What SiverBullet are you running? What settings did you see the best HP using the TST Smarty Stack? Were you using the even number Smarty programs and then the TST for the timing? By the sounds of your post maybe I should sell off the TST if it will not offer any benefit? I wonder if the TST would help if your CP3 was feeding a little more fuel?

If I was in the 550hp with just the Smarty then I may be just fine. Once I have tranny and Silver 62 installed it will be testing time.

If running the 66 silver bullet. Best settings were 2/2 with the smarty on 9 and TST's timing off. I tried to go 3/2 and 3/1, but pressure would drop off. Also tried Smarty on 8, TST with 9* and 12*. With smarty on 9 and TST on 2/2, I could maintain over 22k in the rail. This produced 546. Per Bob Wagner's instruction I removed the TST and made a smarty only run that netted a 561. I would swear on my life that the TST added power when stacked, but the dyno told a different story. I sold my TST last week. The TST may very well be beneficial if you have twin pumps, but I can't say for sure. Personally, I feel like the BETA tune does exactly what the standard smarty and the TST do together, just a little better. I like the simplicity of running just one tuner. I never change the smarty tune from sw9. I drove about 1200 miles last week, averaged 18.75 mpg hand calc'd, and pulled it up on the dyno exactly the way I run on the street. Aside from the smoke from the smarty, you absolutley can't beat the drivability, mileage, and power that the smarty beta provides.

I agree the smarty is sweet all by its self no stack no extra pressure needed marco & bob have been doing there homework on the smarty i think as we head into the future with the performance and adjustability and availability of different tunes with the smarty i think stacking on 3rd gens will be a thing of the past. I have a TST Mp8 smarty stack but I run the smarty by itself on 9 and my truck seems to love it. very smooth excellent power very simple ( the smarty also reads & clears codes something the mp8 and tst do not do)

Smarty Beta

I read a post maybe a month ago by Marco, and unless I misunderstood the 4.4 is NOT the Big Dawg of the Smarty Betas,... I believe it is the 4.2. I'm talking raw power/highest hp levels.

yeah, that sounds right. Someone dynoed a while back and compared the beta 4.4 to the 4.2. If I remember correctly, the beta 4.4 made about 10 less hp with much less smoke.

I believe the introduction of the TNT will be the new Big Dawg for Smarty.
