Is it true that I need more than a TC/VB at 55k miles?

So I was actually thinking about getting a vb and tc for my truck. I went to the diesel perfornance shop today (Edited by Admin) to get a trans flush and he told me that since I already have 55K miles that I would need a completely built trans and that the VB and TC wont be enough considering the cluth packs and internals are not new. I guess theres a local company that can build my trans with new TC and VB, clutch packs, all internals for $3900 including labor with 2 yr warranty and capable of 600 RWHP otherwise ATS for $7100. Well even $4000 is just too much and NOT something I would spend money on. So my question is, is it true that the VB and TC would not be a good idea since I already have 55k miles on my truck or would I really need a built trans?

I have 71000 kms and just had a VB done and it works great. Im goin to do the TC as soon as I can afford it. I would say if its working properly now you'll be fine.If something internal is wrong you can keep the TC and VB and use in the rebuild.

Thats what I thought guys, thanks. So with just putting the VB and TC, will my trans be able to hold high 12s low 13s? My goal is high 12s w/ a stack chip and a bigger turbo and the TC and VB.

No, to get to the times you want youll have to do a pretty good boosted launch and that will kill your stock shafts, along with alot of other things. You can try, but you could be walking home from the track.

13's and break something. For what you are wanting, get a full built tranny.

Well IF the rest of your tranny is good... It all really depends on the launch, if you dont boost at all i would say a low 15(yeah that much difference) with maybe 8 psi(depending on what kind of power you have) i would say a mid to low 13 is possible without having to worry much. Theirs alot of things that factor into this though.

I call BS on that story too! I have 100,000 miles on mine and just did the VB, TC and an intermediate band. Tranny was working fine, but slipping in lockup with Smarty. It looked fine inside and what a difference! The intermediate band was OK but is a known weak point so they put one in. I hope to get another 100K before going with a full rebuild. The fluid recommended, and put in, is Chevron 30w hydaulic fluid.

I can see from looking around at all the broken and cheap stock parts on display that there is alot that can be done to beef up a 48RE. Chrysler makes them no better than they have too. Still, it took the smarty to push it hard enough to slip in lockup. (60 HP with timing) If you do some hard shifting with a solid TC and some real power, expect a broken input shaft, a stripped clutch drum, or a stretched band with loss of second gear. It seems like a weak TC and soft shifting are why these trannies don't just break.

If you dont do a boosted launch...yes. With a slight boosted launch it all really depends...whats a small amount? I would say under 10PSI...but even then thats kinda iffy on your shafts. I plan on running this weekend with a good boosted launch(15PSI) and then one with out any boost so ill let you know the difference, i imagine ill go from a 12.45 to a 14.XX

how about NO boosted launches at all. I right about 15 flat w/ my current setup, if I do VB and TC, that better hold 13s or im not even bothering.
