I had a 98.5. That is when they whent from 12 to 24 valves and now I have a 04.5. 04.5 is when they whent from 305/555 to 325/600. I understand that 01.5 is when they added rear disk breaks.

my 01.5 had rear disk brakes
Loved em too........ get about 30-40mph on the ice and slam on the brakes...........................came to a perfect straight stop........ good thing I had 4wd though!
I guess I woulda been fine if I ended up in the ditch

Hmm..
Guess that means I have a 2002.5. Didnt know that there were any CAD's in the 2002 model year. Guess I got the LAST of the last, not just the last . Now that I know this, my truck feels like a newer model, whew, I have a 2002.5, not the OLD 2002 .

Reallity is, unless the model is a complete redeisgn, parts are used up from the previous year(s) before the new runs are used. While it is common sense business, anyone buying a NEW car/truck does feel short changed. Several vehicles I have owned had leftover parts on them. Some of them were built mid-model year, but still had previous model year equipment. My mother had a 1990 Geo Metro that had the complete front sheetmetal, bumper, headlights, etc. from an '89, but showed a build date of May 1990. Made ordering parts fun, since other components actually required ordering a part from a 1989 instead.

I thought it was when the re tool begain all the trucks thats on the assembly line just kind of stay there and get dubbed the next year truck when the line is re started ? other than the years of a major re tool.
Mine must of been one of the '01 so when they wanted to release it as an '02....
THEY RIPPED OUT MY REAR WHEEL INTERFENDERS
THEY TOOK OFF THE BODY TRIM THATS ON THE BED IN FRONT OF THE REAR WHEEL
AND TOOK THE TRIM OFF THE TAIL GATE
AND LEFT THE OLD TURBO IN IT.
then they said....... well here an '02 for ya'
I think thats all they did

Neither my 01 or my 01.5 have tailgate trim. What happened to your truck more likely was they had an 01 engine left and put it in a new truck. If my research is correct, the engines came complete from Cummins, minus a few accessories. Correct me if I am wrong here guys. If not, then they had an extra turbo left from 01. Every UAW employee I know has told me about the use of excess parts. They don't keep building cars/trucks after a certain date, so there aren't any vehicles left on the line for the retool. That is why after a certain date you cannot order a new truck anymore -- lead time prevents it from being built before the retool. The appearance of new trucks and old trucks together on a dealer's lot stems from vehicles waiting in railyards and distribution centers for shipment. A run of '05's makes it into the same shipment as '04.5's that have been waiting.
If you want to really get into a parts quagmire, buy a Ford. Depending on the plant, build date, and which supplier was used, you might have 4 or 5 different options for the same general part! I had no end of trouble ordering parts for Fords. The descriptions were vague and removal is impractical in many cases, since I was still driving the vehicle. My father just had this problem getting an EGR valve for his Ranger. Three parts later, and it turned out to be a part from a truck 2 years older than his, for California equipped trucks. But the Ranger was ordered new in Wisconsin where it has spent its entire life!!
