I'm afraid too really want to know the answers to this question. My truck won't go into park. It rolls like its' in neutral. I have checked this running and with the truck off. The truck drives and shifts throught the gears just fine it just no longer holds in "Park". I haven't a clue how serious this could be or not. Please be gentle, holidays coming up and don't want to spend big money on trans fix.

Sounds as if the parking paw is broken. Too many slaps in park while still rolling can cause this, not saying that's what you did.

havent checked your oil for any contamination yet have you? I dont know how much crap will actually come off into the oil with that failure. You may be able to get away with just parking in nuetral and using your e brake until you can afford it.

After reading some posts on my searches I suspected this could be the problem. I can say with all honesty I have never ever thrown the truck into park before coming to a stop. I can see how that would be the main cause but I know it's not from me. I am extremely dilligent about starting and stopping this truck as I want it to last. I even let the turbo cool for a few minutes after coming off the freeway having not had a load on. Drives my passengers nuts.
For all I know this could have been broken for months, I just happened to forget the parking brake last night and noticed the truck seemed to be rolling.
Is this something you would recommend I fix asap or can I post pone for a few weeks or even months? The only issue I have is I can't trust the ebrake to hold on inclines.

shouldnt the ebrake hold on hills? I may be wrong but i'd think it needs some adjusting if it wont.
My only concern would be the contamination in your oil, you could wear your bearings and pump out in no time. It may be worth just getting a service done. Someone else with more experience in the transmission will probably have a better idea then me.

Tranny oil looks clean to me. It only has 25k since last flush. In my experience tranny oil has to be pretty old and dirty to notice anything visual. It's been two years so in my opinion I am due for a flush.

Yeah, I'll take it in and have the flush done. I just don't know enough about tranny's to know that if the shop suggests major repair I won't know what their talking about on this one.

Oh, and the e brake holds great, just wouldn't want to trust fully 100% on it.

I remember seeing a thread on here somewhere a while ago on adjusting the parking brake. Try a search for it.

Parking pawl is in the OD unit and external to all the critical pieces of the trans. It connects to the top of the VB on the shift linkage shaft. Either the pawl in the rear has broken or the pin hilding has broken, or, the actuator rod has come loose from the top of the VB. Could be a simple fix or a moderate one.

A good trans tech can drop the OD unit, fix it, reinstall the OD unit without issues. A less experience done will want to rebuild the whole trans. Just have to check it out and see where the problem is.

it's most likely a linkage issue. probably internal but you might get lucky and it'll be on the outside but don't count on it. The VB has a 5/16" dia rod that leads from the VB spool linkage to the parking pawl. Chances are really good the tiny "c" clip popped off and to put it back on you need to lower the VB down a little to see. It don't need to come out completely if it's the clip only. Good time to change fluid and filter. Don't panic... it isn't too bad.

There is a recall on some years (including 05) for the transmission not holding in park sometimes. The fix - make the horn honk if the door is open. Not really a fix if you ask me.

I set my parking brake when I park. Normally mine will engage park properly, but every once in a while I wlll notice that it can roll.

We run these trucks at work and sometimes if it's muddy or dusty they will stop going into park. We fix them by washing where the shift cable goes into the tranny on the drivers side. Usually some washing and working the shifter back and forth takes care of the problem. Also sometimes the cable just needs adjusted. It is apperently pretty hard to break a parking paw out of these trannies since I've never seen it done and I've seen em treated bad. Good luck.
