Truck did not stay / hold in PARK?!?!?
I would not have believed it if I did not see it first hand myself. I parked on a very small slope this morning, probably a 3 to 4 pitch for those guys who know roofs and when I came out, the truck was slowly backing up!?! I had the truck in park - what gives?
It happened probably less than a minute after I turned off the truck and placed the truck in park.
I sometimes have issues with the truck getting it out of park - the gear shift lever tends to be locked.
My wife has been driving the truck for the past couple of weeks while I get her subaru back on the road and she stated that if she parks on a slight angle that when she goes to put it in drive the gear shift lever will go from park to all the way to low with very little feel of positions inbetween. I do not put much into her comments since she is convinced that when ever it is foggy outside, all of her previous cars ran like crap.
Lastly, my truck thinks that it is in reverse when parked and driving. I know this because I have a back up camera that is tied into the reverse signal. My camera comes on as well as my LED reverse lights stay on all the time.
I do not know if the rolling in park issue is the same as the reverse lights staying on all the time or not.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Scott

There are known issues of these trucks not holding in park. Use parking brake before putting in park for safety and to take load off trans. Most auto's have a small cheap little parking mechanism. Don't trust them.

this very problem is the result of the gay recall with a reflash of the ECM. when not fully in park your horn goes nutty when you open the door. rather than fixing the problem with a real park/pawl, they go the cheap route and flash the ecm.

I agree with the honk, sucks.
The weird thing is that my horn did not go off when I got out but then again, I did not have the truck on so even if it was not in park, the horn would still not honk.
Thanks for the replies - I agree with the parking brake, just needs to be a habit for me as well as the wife.

Not to do with computer. The parking pawl in most brands is not much in size or strength. When you see the little crap that is holding back these heavy vehicles it is amazing people aren't killed more often. If like on some heavy equipment and such they put a brake disc on the driveshaft we would have a safe brake system for parking.

Does anyone know or have a picture as to what lever on the transmission tells the vehicle it is in Reverse? I am hoping this is external with linkage.
I think I need to fix my reverse problem first then address the parking problem.
Lastly, is there some kind of linkage "adjustment" procedure that I can go through to make sure my linkage is correctly aligned / adjusted?

Scott, There is a very simple procedure you can try before spending any time or money on this. Climb under the truck and find the bracket that holds the shift cable. Take a hammer and tap on that very lightly. I had to do this on my 03 truck and it worked. Now, the one thing I cannot remember is which way to tap on that bracket, towards the front of towards the rear. I am pretty sure it is towards the rear. You can always lay under there and put the E-Brake on and have someone go through the gears. What you want to find is which way the cable is moving as it goes into park and then tap it so it goes that way more. Either way it does not take much at all when you tap on it. It is very sensitive so tap lightly and test until it works. It may not work but I'd at least give it a try...

Thanks - I will give that a whirl.
I have 2 issues - coming out of park and the signal that says the vehicle is in reverse is on all the time because my back up lights are on.
For now I disconnected my reverse lights so the wife does get pulled over.
I will try tapping on that bracket - maybe it will solve the issue I have of getting the vehicle out of park as well as enable the pin to be locked.
Thanks

+1. It's amazing how many people don't use the parking brake when they get out of the vehicle at a stop.

After the problems with the 03 I always used it with that truck. On this truck I only seem to do it if I'm parked on an incline. I'll probably start using it all the time now.

Try going right under the steer. column, the flap (lack of better word-just waking up). You'll see the shift. linkage/mechanism, I had to re-adjust mine when I installed an aftermarket trans. You take 2 small screwdrivers to hold out the lock tabs, then you can slide the 'lock' out (toward you) and then beable to move the shift lever freely. You might have to try several times to find the correct adjustment.

Keeps the cables working better also. Once used the emergency brake on a truck (not mine) that was never used and it had to be torn apart because the cable wouldn't pull back and the brakes were locked on. Huge PITA.
