transmission water to air cooler

I have an 04 Dodge 2500 with the 48re. lost the snap ring for a clutch pack. I have removed the tranny and will be taking it to a shop to have it worked on. The pickup is stock. I"m really leaning towards a complete rebuild, the guy said that he may be able to replace the snap ring for about 250.00 but i really don't want to take this back out in six months. I will be pulling a 24ft enclosed trailer full of motorcycles. The water to oil cooler is another consern to me is there any imformation out there about removal and flushing. the book mentions a temp control and buypass, what about this. As you can tell I'm new to the diesel thing, I really like this pickup but was spooked when I bought it because of the automatic trans, stories. It has 120,000 miles on it at this time. Any help would be very cool.

No reason to remove it to flush it if you have no large amounts of metal in the pan. What it does is heat the tranny fluid when cold and bypasses it when in warm weather to the front cooler inbetween the CAC and radiator.

Thank you. I just removed the lines from the air to oil cooler and blew them out. Also blew thru the checkvalve. I didn't see any big pieces of metal come out of either cooler and after the fluid blew out there seemed to be now restriction.
