TRANSMISSION TROUBLES

I HAD A REBUILT TRANSMISSION INSTALLED IN MY TRUCK ABOUT FIVE MONTHS AGO. IT RAN OK FOR A MONTH, THEN THE TROUBLE BEGAN. I DON'T KNOW EXACTLY WHAT ALL WAS PUT INTO THE TRANNY, BUT THE BUILDER ASSURED ME IT WAS ALL HEAVY DUTY PARTS.??? THE PROBLEM IS THAT IT IS JUMPING IN BETWEEN 2ND & 3RD AT LOW SPEEDS. THIS WAS THE INITIAL PROBLEM. I HAVE A 10000 LB BOAT THAT I WAS PULLING A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, WHEN THE TRANNY CHANGED FROM 2ND TO 3 RD, IT LIKE TO HAVE BROKE MY NECK & MY PASSENGERS. NEEDLESS TO SAY ONE OF THEM HAD A CUP OF HOT COFFEE IN HER LAP. THE BUILDER HAS REPROGRAMMED ??? THE VALVE BODY, WHATEVER THAT MEANS.WELL, I PICKED IT UP LAST WEDNESDAY. HE THINKS IT IS FIXED, IT IS STILL DOING THE SAME THING. IT DOES HAVE SOME OFF THE WALL BRAND OF TORQUE CONVERTER IN IT WHICH HE SAID HE HAD TROUBLE WITH. I WAS TOLD BY A PARTICULAR BUSINESS IN ATLANTA WHO SPECIALIZES IN THE HIGH PERFORMANCE DIESEL MARKET, THAT I BOUGHT THIS TRANNY FROM, THAT THIS OFF BRAND TORQUE CONVERTOR WAS EVERY BIT AS GOOD AS THE ATS, BILLETS,ETC. I DIDN'T KNOW ANY BETTER SO I BOUGHT IT. WELL, SINCE THE BUILDER SAID HE HAD REPLACED SEVERAL OF THESE, COULD THIS BE MY PROBLEM, OR IS IT SOMETHING ELSE? ANY HELP WITH THIS WILL BE DESPERATELY APPRECIATED.

Re:TRANSMISSION TROUBLES

Sounds like the problems you are having go deeper than a simple TC problem. The valve body is most likely the culprit of the shifting problems. Not to mention that it could be a problem with the governor circut. And of course there's all those seals that can leak if improperly installed.

The bottom line is shifting problems are usually related more to valve body issues than anything else. It could be as simple as a TV cable adjustment. It could be the TC is shifting locked to locked. It's hard to diagnose from it shifts hard from 2nd to 3rd.

I would go to a reputable shop. Call the big guys with the names you know and ask for thier advice. At least they can point you in the right direction.

Re:TRANSMISSION TROUBLES

THANKS OLRATLER FOR THE INFO. I HAD ACTUALLY TALKED TO DTT SOME MONTHS BACK WHEN I NEEDED TO REPLACE MY TRANNY. I WENT WITH THE BUSINESS I MENTIONED IN ATLANTA BECAUSE I HAD DEALT WITH THEM IN THE PAST WITH GOOD SUCCESS. NOW I AM NOT AT ALL HAPPY AS I FIND OUT MORE ABOUT TRANNIES, I FOUND OUT I DIDN'T GET WHAT I PAID FOR. I JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH BILL AT DTT. HE WAS VERY HELPFUL. THANKS AGAIN.

Re:TRANSMISSION TROUBLES

CAPTDASH,

You might try calibrating the APPS, that helped my tranny shifting problems. Mine would go into and out of 3rd under light throttle, and the APPS calibration fixed it.

Re:TRANSMISSION TROUBLES

IF I CAN BE SO IGNORANT, WHAT IS THE APPS & HOW DO YOU CALIBRATE IT?

Re:TRANSMISSION TROUBLES

Here is what I copied out of the "tech facts" section.

This procedure has shown to help 24 valve ISB engines. It is basically teaching the fly by wire accelerator on these trucks to reread the position of the pedal and it's limits. Most complaints this will help with is poor acceleration, improper shifting, bucking in 5 and 6 speeds. Has been known to increase fuel mileage in some instances.

1. Set parking brake
2. Disconnect negative battery cables on both batteries
3. Turn ignition key to run(to drain any remaining capacitors)
4. Let truck sit for 30 minutes( this is the recommended minimum)
5. Return ignition to OFF position
6. Reconnect both batteries and secure, not a timed event
7. Turn key to run position(not start) and depress accelerator pedal slowly all the way to the floor
8. Allow pedal to return to top position slowly
9. Turn ignition switch OFF
10.Release parking brake

This helped my shifting problem, I'm sure wouldn't hurt to give it a try.

Re:TRANSMISSION TROUBLES

If the problem is a lock/unlock problem with the TC, it wouldn't be enough of a jerk to spill coffee or "almost break a neck." It's a pretty gentle sensation, can almost be overlooked if you aren't paying attention, as it happens under light throttle, and the rpm change is only a few hundred rpms. I had that problem a couple of months ago. I talked to Bill K, installed his noise filter, and no more lock/unlock problem. It does sound like an actual shifting problem. Unfortunately, I don't have any helpful suggestions.
