Transmission Torque Converter/Shifting Problem

Wife an I were hauling a horse back home with her 99 24 valve, pulling her 3 horse trailer. Riding down the interstate, all of the sudden, transmission pops out of 4th gear/converter lock-up. We're about 50 miles from home, so we pull over, I check the ATF level and it's good, color and smell all pass the test. No overheating, no CEL's, just no OD or 4th gear, so we limped it home at 40 mph. Engine feels a little sluggish now, like you have to apply quite a bit more throttle for the same acceleration.

I searched the web on my phone on the way home and read about the APPS reset. Tried that when we got home, but only had time for about about 10 minutes with battery disconnected. I also forgot to set the parking brake. The problem was still there afterwards. Should I try to do this again correctly?

I was reading about the temperature and speed sensors, but couldn't find if there was a way to test them instead of just buying replacements. Is that possible?

Also, I was reading about the "ground loop" problem, but it seemed like that only applied to trannys that were hunting for 4th or OD. Should I take a look at that?

Gotta get this truck back up and running by Wednesday. ANy suggestions?
