Transmission Slippage

Ok Guys,

Need some advice. My automatic is starting to slip a little bit as it shifts from 2nd to 3rd. I have found that if I can keep the RPM's up (or the pull on the drivetrain), then it shifts perfectly fine. I called a local transmission shop, and he said something about the rubbers inside the cluthches were too small (a dodge problem), and lets fluid seep by. He said some where between $600 and $2000 to fix it. He wouldn't know for sure until he got into it. :'( :'(

Does this sound kosher ?????

I just feel as if he's sitting there waiting on me, and after he has the truck, then it's closer to the $2000 mark! I'm sure we have some good mechanics on this site who can give me some help on this matter. Would appreciate any and all help.

Thanks in Advance
Grampaw

Re:Transmission Slippage

sounds to me like your throttle pressure ajustment has slipped. if it works under harder acceleration i would raise the throttle pressure adjustment about 3/16s of an in. and see what happens. it will NOT hurt your trans. been buiding them since 1964.

Re:Transmission Slippage

Gramps,

I am not sure about the diagnoises of your transmission. I have herd others complain about simptoms like you described, and theirs was shot. When mine started to go, it was only in overdrive, or high gear. Felt more like a shutter. If in fact you are going to replace the trany, don't just get it rebuilt. That is nothing more then a future problem. Instead you can purchase a transmission from any one of a number of good suppliers advertising in the TDR or on this site. That would be a much wiser choise.

Re:Transmission Slippage

Seems I have about the same problem as Grampaw. 1996 CTD Auto 4X4 LB - 103K. It has just started to slip ( done it three times ) only when the truck is cold - within the first min. or two of driving. It'll act as though it slips out of gear - I let off the gas for a sec. and it goes back in. About 6 wks. ago it started to hesitate changing from second to third ( higher than normal rpms to change ) and would change hard. I changed the fuild and the filter - it seemed to fix it,now this problem with slippage. Can someone give me advice as to what to do - rebuild, new tranny, any diagnosis on my problem...? I'd like to get fixed not repaired. What is a DTT or a ATS trannny..? I want a good tranny - I plan on keeping the truck - -I bought it new. Where do I go to look for a transmission..? How much should expect to pay for a rebuild or a new one..? Sorry for all the questions fellows.. Like Grampaw - I appreciate the help from the guys that know....!

Re:Transmission Slippage

A couple things I forgot to mention and ask. This truck does very little pulling of any kind and hasn't been abused at all. I had the tranny serviced at 50k ( now has 102K ) at the dealer. What adjustments are on my transmission ( bands ? ) and would adjustments cure this problem..? Can someone tell me how to identify what type auto transmission I have in my 1996 CTD 4X4..? Thanks again. I'm starting to panic..

Cumminstd1996,
If you get answers to the questions you've asked here, please be sure they are posted. I have no idea what is meant by DTT or ATS either.

Thanks
Grampaw

Re:Transmission Slippage

Grampaw - I really didn't get the answers to questions but I did some research on DTT and ATS.. They are manufacturers of performance trans. for diesel truck like ours. The are supposed to be best heavy duty trans. around - nothing but new news about them. They both have websites:

http://www.atsdiesel.com/products/products-dodge.html
http://www.dieseltrans.com/performancetransmission.htm

If my slippage gets any worse or happens more often I'll get a new complete trans. - probably the ATS. I have another post in the " Performance - Accessories - 1st and 2nd Gen " forum that might be of interest to you. Post title is " 5K upgrade budget ". There are some very willing to help and knowledgeable people on this site here. Hope this helps and if I do get the answers we're looking for I'll be sure to post them for all to see.

Re:Transmission Slippage

I cant remember the number of fords we had and used the repair in a bottle to fix them. Put a bottle in and run it for a week then change the fluid.

I am not a "fix it in a can" kind of guy BUT this has worked for us in the past . If the tranny is toast you have nothing to loose.

Good luck

Jason
