Transmission Parts List, BS or what?

So I'm ready to make the jump to around 500 hp with hopefully another jump to 600 over the next couple yrs. Went to a shop in town that specializes in building performance transmissions and I now have these 2 questions.

2 things that caught my attention were the Extreme duty 5 gr Spur cut OD planet set and the lack of a billet flex plate. He said the OD planet set would be a good idea, never seen any mention of one on here though. And the flexplate was useless to replace unless I'm using my pickup as a race truck. Any clue?

Or just go to Goerend or another tranny builder and get one built with a warranty on it. For instance, Goerend puts a lifetime warranty on his triple disc TC. Nice to have.... A built Goerend tranny would run around the same price you quote....

Some of the 47re's came with aluminum planetary gears (others came with steel)... they will break before anything.

For that price do not use him go to goerand no question about it.

We all know Dave will back his work up better and go out of his way to help you more than anyone and if you are not saving any big money why even take a chance.

Also it seems very strange to me in the parts list he has the transgo kit for modification of the valve body but yet he also has a sonnax manual valve and a 4 spool valve. Either he is not using part of the transgo kit and putting in the sonnax parts because he likes them better or he does not know what he is doing.

I'm assuming then that Dave uses the steel planetary sets? How would I know if my trans has the aluminum or the steel with it being stock? The upgraded set the guy is tryin to sell me has a 0 deg angle on the gears and I know stock gears have a 15 deg angle. That was his main selling point, would that make much of a difference or should I just make sure I have the steel set?

Give Dave a call tell him exactly what you want to do with the truck and any future power plans you may have. He will then tell you what will be needed and this is key he will not try to oversell you on things you will never need.

He deals with everything from mild to wild and experimental so he has seen most everything.

If you want to build some overkill into yours he will do it that way too, or if you just want to buy parts from him and put it together yourself he will do that as well.

Give him the right information and you will end up with the best product for your application with full backing from him.

Couldn't get through to Dave but I did talk to one of the gals there and she ran off and got some answers for me. Dave uses the oem 5 pin steel planetary set on all his transmissions.

I've heard some good things about the 48RE 6 pin set and I'm sure I could get one of those pretty cheap. How would that match up to this 0 deg spur cut planetary set and would that even be a good upgrade compared to the 5 pin?

I'll tell you right now that if you go with a new torque converter and have some power mods you will destroy a stock flex plate. Mine blew apart with a triple disc and my Juice. As for the OD planet, I kept mine stock and now have 500 hp or so going through it with no problems. I researched for a long time when getting the stuff to do my own tranny and there wasn't any mention of a new OD planet set.

I would go with the Goerend transmission and definately a billet flexplate, either a BD or a ATS whichever your preference. You will tear up your stock one with 500hp and when that happens you can tear up other things. I just broke a ATS solid billet flexplate in my truck a couple of weeks ago with a 700hp truck that is a daily driver, a stock one would have not lasted a week. Talk to Dave directly if you cant get through leave a number I am sure he will call you back and will not sell you things you dont need and whatever he is running in his transmissions should be fine, dont pay extra for stuff you do not need spend it on billet input and output shafts if you are going to do 600hp

from what i know of spur cut gears, they aren't as stong as hellicail cut, and they are noisey. That is in a standard trans. Spur cuts don't take as much HP to run as helicails thats why people go to them. I've never heard of spur cuts in an auto trans befor.

Thats strange cause this guy swears by them but it doens't seem like I'm gonna need them for what I plan on doing anyway. Plus I found a 6 pin OD planet set from a 48RE for free, so that solves that problem.

I'm also goin with the BD flexplate, I haven't seen one post on here sayin they are not needed. So thanks for the help and advice on this

Going with someone local is risky. Ignore his claims that he can do it as well as the big boys for less! Too many here have regretted that kind of decision. JMO.
And I know no 2nd Gen, with a DTT or a Georand tranny, that had problems with the factory flexplate. I have not!

RJ you are running all those upgrades and 628 HP with a stock flexplate, you are running on borrowed time, it is not a matter if it will break it is going to be when, I know Dave Goerend never advised only a stock flexplate with your mods

Been running stock flexplate since 03.... and over 300 boosed launches at the 1/4 mile track.
(So I have borrowed a lot of time!
When I had my tranny built, DTT told me they see very few broken 24v, 2nd Gen flexplates (but lots on 3rd Gen).
Not sure about 12v's. Don't think they have changed their position.
On this site, I suspect we hear about every single one that breaks..... been darn few, IMO.
