Transmission/Overdrive Unit ???

I was at my local transmission shop this weekend having some work done on another vehicle when the shop owner and another technician turned the conversaiton to my truck. They started asking what, if any upgrades I had done. Long story short, they asked me if I had made any changes to the 47re cooling lines supplying the overdrive unit. According to them there is some kind of check valve or whatever that only allows fluid to pass into the overdrive unit every twenty seconds or so. They recomended I have that removed to allow for continuous circulation of tranny fluid. They also added that they had seen countless failures reguarding the overdrive unit for this reason and recomend I make this change.

Have any of you guys heard of this, or made this alteration??? I am planning on having my tranny beefed up this summer as soon as I save the cash later this summer but don't want to burn anything up in the meantime. Thanks for the advise!!!

im not really sure i have heard about it but i thought it came out to be false i had most of my overdrive unit gone through by gorend and ie engineering. its a billet unit with a couple more frictions i think. its alot beefier and its supposed to be unbreakable but we'll see soon.

I would like to know what Mr. Goerend has to say about that as well. I just upgraded all my trans lines to the non-quick disconnect kind & the new pressure line came with a non-removable check valve in it. I'm not too happy about it, especially since the OEM line had no valve.

Thanks for the replies. I will try and reach someone at Goerend tomorrow and get back with what I'm told.

I've got an email in to Goerend Bros. I'll let y'all know what they say. As for the check ball, has anyone had any luck drilling the ball out of the OEM hose end? I don't know what material it's made of. I don't want to trash my new hose

check valve.

I had one on my 95' 1500 with the 47rh tranny. They had a recall on some years of those things. But anyways the check valve is very near the radiator lines connections on the trucks with gas motors. We just cut mine out and used regular rubber fuel hose and clamps and it was still working well when I wrecked the truck with 354k miles on it. Again, I'm not sure if the RE tranny's have it but I know the old RH's did.

DTT removes the check ball on all their rebuilds. Removing it allows better flow thru the line....not just for overdrive. Also requires 30-60 sec idle time, after sitting overnight, to refill tranny with fluid.
