transmission... gone? a clunk, and no go
Hey all,
(I searched for similar problems posted on here, but I don't really know what's going on, so it's hard to search)
Just after a nice oil change and a touch of tranny fluild and a coolant top off, the wife took the truck to town and was coming back with a load of sand (maybe 3/4 ton... but not much more) and she had to back up on the one lane road to let someone pass... then put it in drive, hit the pedal, and heard a big 'clunk', and no go.
It shifts, it goes back and forth into 4wd, but when in a gear and you hit the pedal, it rattles something fierce... and the rattle is the drive shaft looking like it's trying to turn but something ain't catching. I can't tell if it's in the front or back.
I guess my question is, how bad is this? I'm almost certainly going to have it towed to the local place, but what are we talking about here? any ideas?
Tys

It might be a long shot, but it could have been the rear differential that let go and not the tranny.

Did you try to put it into 1st on the shifter and see if it moves? If you put it in 1st and it moves chances are the sprag spun and broke the case like Moparbubba said.

doesn't move
it doesn't move in any gear in 4wd or 2wd.
and, it does sort of seem like the worse rattle is coming from the back axle...
(it's still sitting on the side of the road btw... had to borrow a neighbors truck to get the load of sand out of it before it could be towed, and of course, on his Ford diesel we had to pull of the starter and replace it with another one from a different truck. nothing like spending a morning just to get back behind where you were the day before)
any more input would be helpful. thanks,
Tys

Maybe the clunk that was heard was a couple of pinion or ring gear teeth breaking off in the differential and somehow becoming jammed. I'd try disconnecting your driveshaft and see if you can turn the rear end. Maybe even put the transmission in gear and see if it'll turn as well with the driveshaft removed, of course. Unless, you wanna let it spin in your hands .

update - Completion of the whole thing
Trying to make sure I update this thread, and wanted to include photos...
So, it was the rear output shaft - split right in two, at the governor pin hole.
I'm so lucky to get to blame the wife, as she was driving. The transmission guy said he's only seen that one other time in 20 years.
There was also some sort of aluminium support thing that got chewed up and spit into the pan, and they found some other half-assed stuff from a previous rebuild (that I'd never heard about!)
Big points for Onemoparnut who got it right.
and the bill was.... $2950, for a bunch of rebuild, including some fancier bits. I didn't go with the 'pull the mountain' set up, but it seems like I should be able to do work.
anyway, thanks as always.

I'm fixing to pull my trans and expect to find the same damage. Cept I was about 10' past the starting line going from a 25ish psig boosted launch and got up to 45psig when it let loose.
oops.
oops.
