Transmission EXPERTS WHERE ARE YOU ..going into lockup way too soon.
I'll try and make this story short and I want to stress that I am not pointing fingers at anyone or any company. I just need to solve this issue. Matter of fact I may be the one that created the problem by washing the motor but it did go into this condition once even before I washed it and after the trans was installed.
I had a Goerend trans installed along with a turbo and injectors. After the install I drove the truck 150 miles with a little Jeep in tow. I drove normally and had NO issues. Truck felt great. This was about a month ago.
I wash my motor probably twice a year and have been doing it since new. I don't pressure wash I just hose it mildly to get the buildup off.
At this point the truck has a TST box and a FASS system on it.
A day or so after washing it the truck starts hesitating and stalling. Almost got stranded. After a short wait it started and I got home. I disconnected the TST and all was good except the sucky power level without the TST .
So I called TST and was informed that the aluminum label that is screwed on the unit under the hood tended to lose it's seal over time and washing could expose it to moisture. The symptoms I was having matched TST's findings. There were some moisture droplets under the label but no moisture inside the unit. I was told to dry the unit out with a hairdryer. I did so and reconnected everything.
Got my power back and everything seemed fine. No more hesitating and no more stalling.
Now I have this problem that's really a pain. Under certain conditions the trans goes into the upshift lockup mode that some have said is the overheat protection mode. I used an IR gun on the tranny pan and the highest reading I get anytime is 195 F. This is normal. Even one time I was filling up with fuel and when I drove off it went right into this mode.
Talking to Dave at Goerend, he sent me a new temp sensor for the trans just in case there was a fluke bad one. I changed that the other day and no change. Dave took me through a bunch of diagnostics. We disconnected the speed sensor to force a CEL light. We got the code but no CEL. We proceeded to unplug the 9-pin and the speed sensor. Tranny went into limp which Dave said he expected. We were able to fool it into first by putting it into nuetral and then quickly dropping it into first. I was able to drive and manually upshift through some gears.
Dave asks if I have a CEL (check engine light). No light but I got all of the codes you would expect when we read the codes. He is thinking the ECM is causing the problem since the CEL isn't coming on. We are going that direction right now.
I'm in limbo right now. Anybody have any ideas as to what could cause this condition when the trans is not getting hot? Will the dealership be able to diagnose this if we can't ourselves?

OK let me reword this so maybe someone who knows these transmissions can understand what I'm asking.
What can you do to make the trans shift into overdrive too soon? The trans does not seem to be getting hot.

Mine goes fully into overdrive and locks at 40 mph. Doesn't do it all the time, it just gets into the mode almost every day and isn't really predictable.
We are working on it but we haven't been able to pin down the cause.

Mine goes into overdrive and locks at 44 mph and 1275 rpm. I just thought this was normal.

What do you want it to do? I want mine locked up as soon as possible as it wastes fuel to spin the TC unlocked.

Mine locks at 47 mph just about everytime. It sucks when it locks up the sametime as it goes into overdrive. Talk about a hard shift

Problem fixed. Trans was getting hot. Scan tool says sensor was reading 237 deg at which time the premature upshifting starts. This is not documented in the Chrysler manual but there are others that have hotter running transmissions that have experienced this. The manual says it should not act different until 260 deg but apparently 237 deg causes other symptoms.
We fixed it by adding an aux trans cooler and gutting the drainback valve.
