STOCK VS. PERFORMANCE COSTS???

There's been a ton of talk lately about trasmissions.... I have to admit I'm spoiled. On our farm, our main Mechanic was a Transmission builder for 15 yrs so I've never had the oportunity to have a tranmission built from a retailer. I've lost the transmission on my 1999 auto last year at about 125000 running a EZ for better than half of those miles. He built it up as much as he could with the resources available to him... but I'm sure he's not DTT or Goerends or Suncoast or ATS!!!

So my questions:

What does it cost to just have a tranny re-built (for just a stock rebuilt tranny) at any ole shop compared to the aftermarket performance diesel shops (for something to hold maybe 400-500 horse)???

How does it work if you're not fortunate to live near one of these shops? Can you order the part and trust your friendly tranny shop can do the install and rebuild for you with your new parts?

I'm doing mine myself. I'm not the "tranny man" at work (nor do I want to be), but I do have access to the tools and have built a few transmissions for myself and others out of my garage. So far I have about $1500 in parts piled up that need to get assembled.

Yeah, that's more than what it cost me to have our guy do it, but maybe he doesn't go after the right parts....

But I'm wanting to know what normal shop (Jow blow's transmissions) costs are compared to Diesel Performance shop costs (ie. DTT, ATS....)???

I'm wondering if it's really all that much more to do a performance one if you're doing one anyway... I can't imagine that it cost too much more than a normal shop being that they have to replace the same things just with lesser parts. Can some one satisfy my curiosity?

Well I just talked to one shop here and he quoted about $1000 just for the labor ! Sounds kinda high to me !

I did one for my Dad using Dave G's stuff. Single disk and no billet shafts for a just under 1500.

I think the tranny shop I was talking was really discouraging me because I wasn't using their parts. DTT even told me their labor is higher than most and their labor was usually around $850 I think. I am going to have to shop around for a good tranny shop that wants to make this work.

Comparing a Jow Blow's standard rebuild with a DTT trans is like comparing a pile of gravel to the Rocky Mountains. There is quite a bit of stuff that is either modified or replaced completely inside a DTT.

No one has answered my question yet... I'm aware of the difference in Mechanics... I'm looking for the differences in actual costs?!?!?!

The reason I ask is that from the prices I'm seeing online from DTT and others, I just can't imagine that have a stock tranny rebuilt back to stock form would really be a whole lot cheaper... right???

Yes, rebuilding a stock trans back to stock standards will be MUCH cheaper than rebuilding a stock trans back to high performance standards, such as a DTT.

How much cheaper... I've never priced out either option as I stated above, but I have a friend that paid close to $3000 for a stock tranny in his dodge not too long ago. Now I'm looking as these sites and wonder why anyone would ever go that route?

I priced a remanufactured Jasper transmission (basicly stock) and it was the same as Dave's. My dilema is that I don't want to do the install, so Dave's trany with shipping and install is the same cost as a DTT installed from Floor It. Choices, choices...

I am hoping to rebuild mine with DTT VB / TC / MAster Rebuild kit and a couple of billet pistons and come in about $2000 on parts PLUS hopefully $700 labor.

How much was the R&R?, Dave's prices and warranty has always been the best.

Just confirmed with my friend... He had a basically stock transmission rebuilt installed from a company called Hansers in Montana. They did install a Billet TC and some minor valving but I doubt it's anything like a DTT or Goerends and he still paid $2700 otd.
