Were these standard on trucks with the factory installed hitch?

Yes all of these trucks are equipped with a transmission cooler. It is located up front in front of the radiator. When you open the hood it is the smaller one on the right the one on the left is your AC condenser. An aftermarket in-line cooler mounted to the frame is recommended to better keep things cool while towing.

Automatics...Yes! 5 & 6 speeds.....No.
Since xp8103 lists no Tranny Temp gauge...I assume he has a manual tranny?
But he did ask about a 47RE.... so

I thought the cooler on the right was the engine oil cooler. And the tranny cooler was a heat exchanger under the turbo, whiched is cooled with coolant from the engine radiator?

They are both in line together, just trace the lines you'll see.
The heat exchanger is to help the auto get up to operating temps quicker.
Seems kinda goofy when you are trying to cool it and the heat exchanger is heating it up.

OH, OK..... so would adding an electric fan to the cooler help with this system?

There are two. Both designed for cooling, AFAIK.
Air to oil on the grill....water to oil below turbo.

Adding an additional cooler inline mounted to the frame is easier... The engine fan pushes some air through the cooler already anyways.

Oh and sorry for not specifying in my previous post that all AUTOMATIC equipped trucks have a transmission cooler.

And Scott; I feel the same way about the heat exchanger. Really when you think about it the engine doesn't heat up any faster than the transmission does. Probably more for the colder climates to maintain temps in cold weather. There is quite a large surface area on those aluminum cases
