transmission conversion or rebuild?

currently my father has a 96 12 valve, with an automatic tranny. i know the tranny's are weak. I use the truck as much as he does, but since he uses it for towing a boat and i want to bomb it, i figured the tranny might fail sooner or later. is it better to rebuild the auto? or find a manual transmission and swap it over with a better clutch? I don't know what else would be needed but i would assume a doner truck would be the best bet.

Whats every ones opinions.

I's keep the Auto and just get it built, you can see what I have on my truck and the tranny is holding just fine.

yep it's expensive, but it's worth it in my opinion. If you like the idea of a stick shift, I'd say go for it. It'd just take a little work to do, but when you were done it'd be pretty nice. Especially if you tow alot.

yea im just curious what else would be needed.

if i just need a tranny and some other little odds and ends it wouldn't be that bad, but im sure that the computer has to be changed but i have no idea about the driveline and such.

its always an option.

I would definantly keep the auto. I have my '01 auto and my dad drives an '02 HO 6 spd.

I have a Juice with attitude and he has 65HP EDM injectors with a Con OFE clutch. His manual setup is nice and smooth, but it's slow and I don't like having to wait for the turbo to spool back up on every shift.

A built auto is the CATS MEOW! I have a performance single disk converter and a shift kit on a brand new trans. I really like it, but my VB and TC just aren't strong enough for the Juice's higher levels. I'm ordering the Suncoast valve body and torque converter from www.dieselnutmotorsports.com .

If you are going to build your auto, don't cheap out like I did with generic performance stuff, because I'm kicking myself now for it. Just spend the money on Suncoast stuff, or any other performance diesel shop of your choice like DTT, Goroend, ATS, etc.

Yes, I already had a vlavebody on my old tranny so we got credit on it when we bought the tranny about a year ago. I don't know what prices are at right now. PM Bobcat698 he just got a new one a month or so ago.
