I currently own a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500.

4WD, Crew Cab, Short Box.

I am up to nearly 80k miles and would like to replace my transmission fluid and transfer case fluid, but when going to the the parts store in order to find out what kind of fluids I need, he needed to know what kind of transmission and transfer case my truck had.

I have the VIN number and called the dealership but he told me my transmission type was a G566..... Maybe I'm wrong but I thought I was looking for a number like NV5700 (or the sort, I may be off).

I wanted to ask for some help learning about what type of transmission I had and transfer case and what kind of oils/fluids I should be putting in.

I wanted to go synthetic or a mix in order to improve the life of my vehicle.

Any help is highly appreciated.

If you have an auto it's a 48RE and it takes 15-16 qts of ATF+4.

Your transfer case holds 2.5 qts of ATF+4.

Your power steering unit also takes ATF+4.

Well, based off you guessing on the manual transmission model name, I would assume that you have a stick. That leaves two option, the first half of 05' had the NV5600, and the second half had the G56. I'm not sure on the specifics for the NV5600, but I know the G56 uses ATF-4+. If you have an auto (which would be the 48RE), it takes ATF-4+ also, and so does the transfer case.

The NV uses synchromesh, not ATF. Reverse is right and up on the NV, I don't think the G56 is the same but someone can confirm.

Yea,

I do drive the 6-speed Stick. G56 sounds like thats my poison then.

So ATF 4+ is the fluid used in the transmission, is that the same for the txfr cases as well?

yes atf+4 in both.

Is reverse up/right or down/left? I didn't think they started using the Mercedes trans until 06 models.
Transfer case takes ATF regardless of which trans you have.
Little tip. Get yourself one of those $10 drill operated pumps (most Napa's carry them) and a couple female garden hose to hose barb fittings and 4-6' of hose to fit the fittings. Use this to pump the fluid back into the trans and t-case. Otherwise it's a messy job getting the fluid poured back in with a hose taped to a gear lube bottle nozzle.

they started useing the G56s in 05 1/2. also if it's cast iron it's an nv5600 if it's aluminum it's G56.

Is it good to put all synthetics in the transmission and txfr cases rather than ATF+4?
