transfer case?

My transfer case has a speed limiter that causes it to kick out of gear at higher revs both high or low range.Could i put in four wheel drive then disconnect it without scattering the case.

I never heard of a speed limiter on a trasfer case. The transfer case is only a gear box that happens to have a chain that drives the front drive shaft.

If you are saying that the transfer case is shifting to nuetral by itself then you have a mechanical problem within the case or the shift linkage.

By disconnecting do you mean the front drive shaft. Yes you can remove the front drive shaft and not hurt anything to drive it.

We need a little more info on what is really happening. Like papaduck said, your t-case has no speed sensor.

speed limiter ,sensor i dont know what you might call it.But what ever it is,it causes the transfer case to kick out at high rpm`s.I was told by a dealer mechanic who i trust knows about the transfer case in a 06.He told me that i didt need to bring it in because thats how they work. I wanted to sled pull one time just to see how it would do.I would think thats why you dont see many 06 and up pulling. If their is a safe way to bypass this limiter i shure would like to know.although he did say i might try 4wheel hi 2 gear then shift to 3rd but i dont think that will work.

As you were told in the other thread you started, there is no speed limiter in your transfer case. It is a simple gear box. If the dealer (that you trust) told you there is a switch you might want to look for a new trustworthy dealer.

I would think you have a mechanical problem with your gears and it is jumping out of gear.

The transfer case gears cannot turn any faster than the drive shafts that are attached to the axels. The input shaft from the transmission can turn at about twice the speed of the output if it is in low range. These speeds are directly related to speed of the truck and is not limited.

The only thing that I know of that is limited is the RPM of the engine by the govenor. You can still over speed the engine by down shifting a manual transmission in to low a gear. I understand that an auto trans will not go into a lower gear that will over speed the engine.

The red line on the Cummins is 3200 RPM. If you exceed that then you take a chance of hitting a valve with a piston and do major damage. If you want to exceed the 3200 RPM then you must install stronger valve springs.

Does your truck have and electronic shift transfer case or a manual shift lever? What RPM does it come out of gear? If it is electronic shift there is definitely a electrical problem.

I would hate to be going down hill with a heavy load using the engine braking and have the transfer case kick out of gear. It just doesn't make sense as the previous posters have mentioned. Good luck.

It has a electric motor, it jumps out at around 3200 rpm.I can use 4hi or low and it operates as if nothing was wrong its just when you get the rpm up on take off this happens.there is no grinding sounds no leaks, or vibration. It seems i am the only one to ever have this problem.

At 3200 RPM you are at redline on the engine. The only thing that should happen is the engine should de-fuel to reduce power to hold the 3200 RPM.

Wouldnt it make a noise if it were mechanical putting it in or out of gear. As it stands i have never took apart a 273 just like most of the guys that post here.I posted what i was told by this mechanic that probably made an honest mistake. This is the same dealer that took the dash out to fix the a/c blend door. Labor cost $600 my cost $0 when it was out of warranty hows that for (trustworthy). As you were told
