my 4wd makes a squeaking/grinding sound but not in 2wd, whats wrong with my transfer case?

To add some more info to this, the noise is heard when the transfer case is engaged. We also heard it when the t-case was disengaged but the hubs were still locked (his truck has locking hubs). With the hubs unlocked the noise goes away, but if you engage the t-case the noise comes back, even with the hubs unlocked.
