Trans Temp Light
hey everyone, I have a 1994 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 Diesel. It's got a 5.9 Cummins Turbo Diesel engine. I think the transmission is a 47RH. The problems I'm having is this:
I start to drive the truck and after the engine warms up my trans temp light comes on. The transmission is about a year old. I have noticed that the truck will not shift into overdrive when the trans temp light is on. The transmission does shift perfectlly when the truck is first run. The transmission shop that installed the transmission said they will not honor their side of the warranty. (I have a lawyer looking into this)
I feel that this is a problem with the transmission coller. I read somewhere about there being a check valve in the cooler or in one if the lines that could be stuck. Which makes perfect sense since the trans will overheat after about 5-10 minutes of use.
If you think it is a problem with the cooler, which cooler, trans pan do you recommend? I was looking at the jegs website and they have some interesting parts. I do tow a trailer sometimes Nothing too heavy. 6 rolled bails of hay at max. An occasional car or so.

The check ball can restrict flow but rarely does it completely stop it.
First thing I would do in your case is make sure the trans temp sensor isn't shot. You can either add a aftermarket gauge (best) or just replace the sender. If you decide to go the gauge route let me know and I'll explain how to trick the factory sender.
Also make sure your coolers aren't plugged up with bugs, hay, etc.

I think you are barking up the wrong tree, I've never heard of a check ball sticking closed. Your '94 didn't come with a check ball, it was added in a recall, if the recall was even done.
You can see which recalls were done on your truck here

you will need your VIN number.
The check ball is in the line with the temp sender, driver's side by the starter.
Big concern with the ball is when people add a cooler line from a '94-'95 to install a temp sender in a newer truck because in the newer trucks the check ball is on the other side in the line to the engine coolant/ATF cooler. You don't want two check *****.
I've seen lots of trans temp senders go bad, look there first.

If the sensor detects the tranny overheating it will tell the computer to switch out of OD. Just like when the fluid is below like 50 degrees it won't allow TC lockup or overdrive. I'd try a new sensor and see what it does for you. Does your fluid look burnt? If it is hot enough to trigger a properly working sensor than the fluid is getting really really hot. I've had mine up to 250* and still no warning light.
Check your fluid to see if it's burnt, if it is look for a restriction in the circulation. If it isn't replace the sensor.

i ordered the sensor today, but here's an update, I removed the return line to the transmission, started the truck, put the truck in neutral and the fluid shot out, so I think I can disregard a stuck check valve. I will check on the sensor tomorrow.

If the sensor is telling the pcm the fluid is under 70F or over 220 OD won't lock.
Since the light is also going on it sounds like yours is reading too high.

Looks like the shop will have my truck for a day or two. It is safe to take it in. I'm meaning I don't want them to screw anythign else up on my truck just because their having to do free work.... Here's a list of things incomplete according to your list. Thanks for that.

another update: Well, after sitting there for 5 hours then starting it up, the trans temp light would not go off. I only messed with the connection today to check it for dirt. Then plugged it back in. I also noticed an inline transmission filter.

If you take your rig in ask if they are going to send it out for the coil spring reinforcement recall. This recall requires welding which I would never trust to a dealer mechanic. I would personally go to another dealer if the first one says they aren't sending it out to a real welder.
