the mean-spirited, mechanically-disadvantaged previous owner was kind enough to clip the sender wires on the auxillary trans cooler. I don't know what kind of auxiliary cooler it is, theres just 2 sad little wires there stickin' out of the sender.
Can I use any type of electronic gauge? Or are senders and gauges 'matched'...?

It is probably a switch, not a sender, to turn the fan on at a certain temp.

thanks for the reply, you may be right, there is currently a manual toggle switch to turn on the trans cooling fan, but theres also 4 little holes in the top dashboard where someone removed what I assumed to be the trans temp gauge mount... (yes I know what happens when I assume)

I'll be doing a little research on external trans coolers now.

The aux trans cooler turned on by a switch on the hot side exit point on the tranny. If the sender detected too hot of temps, it would turn the fan on.
