Trans Stuck in Gear? Any Help?
Hi, I'm new to the forum and hope that maybe someone can help me with my problem. I have a 2000 Dodge 2500 2wd Automatic. The other day I was backing up and pulling foward moving somethings around the house and the tansmisson got stuck in gear. Fisrt it was in drive and I tried to put it in reverse but it would only gone in neutral, so I pulled it down into 1st and then tried to put it back in reverse and it only would go into drive. I kept trying this until it was stuck in 1st only. I then drove the truck in front of my shop and turned it off. The trans moved just fine and wasn't making any noise or slipping. My first thought was that the linkage had some how come loss or got stuck, but after I got under the truck and removed the linkage from the shift lever of the trans I noticed that the gear shifter and linkage worked fine and I was able to move it freely. I then tried to move the shift lever on the trans and it will not move in or out of gear. It seems like something has come loose inside the trans and got wedged and it not letting it move. Has anyone ever had this problem before? Does anyone know what I have to do to fix it?
Thanks for all the help, Tanner

Sounds like the rooster tail may have gotten some slop inside the transmission and let the detent ball fall out... Pull the pan and see if there is a 3/16" ball rolling around. If so then you will need a mumbly peg to hold things in place while trying to get the rooster tail in place... I will try to find some pictures to show you what all I mean in case you have to do this. Let me know what you find.
