Trans Question - What fits??

What is the difference in the transmissions in our trucks from 94-02??? Could you use a trans from a say 98 12 valve in an 01 24 valve, and just swap out the valve body or will it not work? The reason for asking is a friend of mine wrecked his truck and it has a full billet GB trans in it and only has about 5-6000 miles on it. Truck was totaled but he bought it back. Any info would be great. Thanks

Since it's a Goerend tranny I'd suggest asking Dave Goerend about whether it'd fit your purpose.
My 2c on a tranny from a crashed vehicle are that you should go over it with a fine comb before installing it. Same as with engines the inertia of the shafts etc sometimes damages bearings in a crash. If you catch it before they disintegrate you have some 20-50 US$ bill for the bearing and maybe a gasket or two. But if they break and destroy the shaft, deris plugs valves etc- you face a bill with some nasty figures on it.

I would guess the 98 may have a 47RH while the 01 would certainly have a 47RE? I don't know if the parts from the hydraulic tranny will direct swap to the electronic one. Shafts and TC will likely be ok, but talk to Dave like Alpine suggests. If you moved the whole thing, you will have tranny codes set since the ECM or PCM (I don't know which) will be looking for signals from the 47RE. Of course, if the 98 12 valve uses a 47RE, disregard the previous statements.

94-95 used the 47RH - 96-02 47RE ... you can use the 98 in the 02 but you will need to change the electronics on the valve body.

Rammin On -do you by chance know whether the connector is the same and also whether there has been a difference in programming for a changed VB?

Electronics should be the same between a '98 and '01(govenor pressure sensor is different but the plug in on the outside of the tranny should be the same)

Edit: N/S switch will be different on the '01 and NOT interchangable between cases! '01 will look like the one below

Connector is the same ... you will need to swap the valve body electronics - solenoids and all. There is no connection on an 01 trans as described by tactransman

Tell me why you have to change all the electronics...in detail.
And are you saying the N/S switch is the same on all years?

up to '96(screw in)

'97-'00(screw in)

'01 -up (push in)

The push in you describe is used on a 48RE not a 47RE .... the electronics have different internal connectors and values ...

I am sorry but experience has shown me that you are incorrect.

So what your saying Rammin-on is that if I change out my valve body with the one in the trans and this trans should work with no problems right?

What are you going to do about the govenor?? The 47RH has a Govenor and the 47RE does not. Govenor presure is controlled electrically on the 47RE. I do not see how putting the RE valve body in the RH trans is going to work. Where will you put the transducer if you just switch the electronics?

Redliner ... yes ... but don't just change the valve bodies. Take the electronics off of your 01 valve body and put them on the 98 valve body. The valve body in the GB trans is modified and you want to keep it! The 98 is not an RH , but an RE so you'll be good to go. (94-95 RH - 96 up RE) The only thing you might need is a VBA to fool the computer if the pressures are too high. You'll know quick as the trans will go into limp mode. Call me and I'll send you one at no charge, with install instructions.
