tranny troubles
i'm taking in this morn. thought my problems were created by the superchips but since learned while it was off that it is still doing it. what it does is second gear jerks or surges back and forth. if you put the tranny in 2 and let it idle it will jerk like a standard. have no idea. if anyone has seen this please let me know.

Can you explain some more of the symptoms.
I had this issue https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...ht=auto+shifts
Is it something like this?

new2ctd i think mine is a little different. hers my deal. it started while sitting in traffic in D. went to move it shifted to second and then felt like it slamed back to first then back to second and would do that a couple of time then go. All this occurs at low rpms it's a jerking almost like a standard if you let it come to an idle say in third or so without pushing in the clutch. last night i was in traffic and just put the shifter in 2 and oh man here it came i could get it to do it every time the rpms got below 1650. took it to the dealer this morning and didn't think i was going to be able to repeat it naturally. they are looking at me like i'm nuts making all these jerking comotions. finaly she came through and shook the tech. he says it feels like a fuel problem not transmission and that it could very well be the lift pump. it figures i've been on this site worrying like a baby about putting any boxes on the truck and mine goes out without me getting to play. at this point i just want it fixed i hate not knowing for sure.

it's going back in on wed morning. my thing that i don't understand is if it is the lift pump why is it only doing it in 2nd (auto). unless i just am not noticing it anywhere else. could there be a power loss also?

If you put the gear selector in 2 and you are idling, you should still be in 1. It sounds like possibly a valve body issue and not a fuel issue with the way you are explaining it. I've had a jerking issue with mine once when the fuel filter got really trashed from some bad fuel, but I could definitely tell it wasn't the trans...

thats what i feel it has got to be the trans. it feels like a standard that you let idle down until it is near stalling in a higher gear like say 3rd. they can check what ever they want as long as it gets cured. they can check the window motors if they want but i want a good reason for why and what was done when i get it back. i'm getting ready to make a trip to Colorado and i want to be able to trust it.

I think it could be the 1-2 gov solenoid. If it is an off pedal idle condition and does it shifting to 2, then back to 1 then to 2, real fast, that is what my 47RE did a few months after putting in a new valve body from Goerend's. I called Dave and he told me this is what it is, that it is a very poorly designed solenoid and moves at, around .070" I think to make the shift. Well, any kind of flaw in that movement will cause the shift to hang. He said he had tried to come up with a new design, but couldn't get it perfected or something like that He sent me a new one at no charge and it took me about 30 minutes to put it in. Should be covered under your warranty. I think the overall design of the 48 is the same as the 47. It is just beefed with a few more electronics and higher line pressures, and that is the only problem with the 47 to begin with. Good luck.

Mine started doing something similar in the first fifty miles after I got it. Would shift very fast back and forth between gears.
I babied it back to the dealer. They pulled the tranny pan and found a bad electrical connection at a plug that connects to the shift solenoid or governor, can't remember exactly. Anyway, they installed a new wire and while they were in there a new governor. Been fine since. Someone at the factory had just forced the plug together while misaligned.
I wish these trucks weren't so dependent on delicate electronics.

Mine seems like it's doing the same thing, almost like it's lurching back. I find it real bad when going through a neighborhood at maybe 15 mph then when it desides to shift it sounds like a slight poping sound from the rear end. Mine's going to the shop tomorrow to get looked at. Any ideas what the poping's from? Sorry dont mean to hijack, im new here and still seeing how everything works.

well it happened. they tell me that is normal. "we checked with star and it is a normal operation" so i asked explain this to me. well it is not the lift pump.(imagine that) it is the computer trying to figure out what gear it needs to be in for that low of an rpm. I'm not buying it to me it is getting more like a slip now with a jerking. i'm taking it to a tranny shop i know and have them drive it. I knew this was gonna happen. when they test it with you, oh yea there is something wrong can you leave it here? Then when they get it for a couple of days it magically becomes a normal function.

Sounds like what was going on with mine. Here is what I got from the dealer today when I asked for the service history for my truck.
"Trans had double shift into second. Monitored DRB GOV pressure while driving. Found GOV pressure fluctuating during double shift. Replaced GOV SOL and transducer. Test drove veh verified veh now shifting properly double shift is no longer present."
I haven't had any trouble with this since I bought it a month ago so my guess is that they fixed it. I just thought I would through this out there. I hope it helps.
