Tranny Troubles
I just started to have some shifting problems with my tranny and i'm not sure how bad it may be. The transsmission seems to slip when it shifts from first to second. Starting off in 1st the rpms will go up until it shifts to second but sometimes it seems to shift into neutral and the rpms will suddenly shoot up then shift into second a moment later and carry on normally. This only happens around every third or fourth time i start from a stop. It also only occurs when i'm lightly on the throttle and the lighter the throttle the more often it happens. It has never happend once when i floor it. I'm not sure if my valve body is malfunctioning or if i'm going to need a rebuild soon? I'd like to take it to a tranny shop but most of them are probably goona tell me it needs a rebuild regardless ? I need to find a reputable shop first... The fluid looks and smells normal.

How is the fluid level? I had that problem, and the fluid was low. Check it when the truck is at normal operating temperature, in NEUTRAL or in DRIVE (use proper safety considerations -- e-brake, extra person on sefvice brakes, chocks, etc.) and check the level on the stick. You might just be a bit low. Do a fluid and filter change using proper ATF+4 fluid, and if you want, follow the tech facts guideline on adjusting the bands.

I checked the fluid and it was still in the OK range but definetely on the low side of it. I will add some fluid and hopefully that helps then perhaps follow it up with a tranny flush and a band adjustment. I just really hope its not my valve body thats screwed up ! or worse....

I was only low a quart or maybe two at most, and my truck wouldn't climb a very slight grade getting out of a campground. Turns out I had a minor leak caused by some really bad brazing of a temp sensor port on the pan.
Moral of the story, it doesn't take the loss of much fluid to affect trans operation.

I found a minor leak under the tranny, can't quite find the exact location yet but it took 2 quarts of fluid, it was on the low side of OK. Definetely shifts good now hopefully that was the problem. Thanks Guys!
