Tranny shifts too early?

Hey everyone, since owning my CTD I have been very pleased with it. However I think the tranny is shifting early while accelerating to highway speeds. When I get to about 50 mph the tranny shifts and brings the RPM's down to about 1300. But the kicker is that it seems like it shifts twice. I can watch my tach and hear it too. When I get to about 50, the tranny shifts once and I notice a 200-300 RPM drop, then a second or two later it shifts again and drops the RPMs to about 1300. When it does that it feels like I am really lugging it. I have temporarily solved this by giving it more go pedal before it shifts. This is bugging me just a little that it does this. Here's a little extra info, I have the 47RE tranny with 3/55's in the rear. Any info will be appreciated.

Sounds pretty normal to me depending on what gear you are going into. What you are feeling is a shift to 3rd or 4th then lockup. Mine acts the same way when light on the pedal.

Dave

BTW, I have 47RE, 3.54 as well.

Okay, I feel better now. I just don't like the engine lugging like it does at that speed. Thanks Dave.

Re:Tranny shifts too early?

Adjust your TV cable that leads from your TPS to your tranny.
If you bring it foward a little it will delay your shifts and raise line pressure at the shifts.

This takes a little practice to get adjustments just to your liking.

Re:Tranny shifts too early?

Just lock out OD manually with the little button on the end of your gear select lever. Wait until you're going a little faster, 55-60mph, then hit the button to shift into OD (4th gear).

The first shift you are feeling is the 3rd-4th gear shift, the second shift (although I guess it's not actually a shift) is the Torque Converter locking up. Normal behavior for a stock 47RE.

Re:Tranny shifts too early?

Isn't he feeling 3rd, Lock-up, then 4th?

I was under the impression that 47/48RE trans shifted 3rd to 4th locked.

I don't believe so, but I could be wrong.

Cruising in 3rd, you hit the OD button to shift to 4th, you should see a slight jump in RPM, this is the TC un-locking. Then you'd see the drop in RPM, which is the shift to 4th, then another drop in RPM which would be the TC locking up.

Now, if you're accelerating from a low speed up to say 50+mph where the TC would lockup, I think the TC would remain unlocked through 3rd gear, until the trans shifts into 4th, then the TC would lock. This I am not so sure about though, never really worried about too much because I always cruise around town with OD off, then flip it on when I get up to freeway speeds.

Like I said, this is the way I understand trans to operate... but I am by no means an expert.

Now, on the other hand, my ATS trans does shift from 3rd to 4th locked up, or any other gear if I so choose.

Re:Tranny shifts too early?

Ok, you guys have enlightened me. But why is the delay between shifts so short? It goes lock-up to 4th (or 4th then lockup) withing 2-3 seconds of each other. When its done shifting the engine is just lugging it until the RPMs come up.

Re:Tranny shifts too early?

It goes into lock-up so quickly because you are light on the pedal. It is not actually 'lugging' the engine and will not hurt it. If you want to accelerate, and give it a little more pedal, it will go out of lock-up and give you higher RPM. However, I do as others have said, and keep mine out of OD until about 50mph - 55mph if pulling the TT.

Everything you've said about your tranny sounds perfectly normal to me.

CTD99 - mine goes from 3rd to 4th then lock-up.

Re:Tranny shifts too early?

jr i think it locks in 3rd because when i am in four low in the mts going slow it goes to third right away and you can feel it easy there ,lock up i think. sounds normal if you get a shift kit it will be a better shift. after warranty. ;D

Re:Tranny shifts too early?

Definitly after warranty. I also think it goes 3rd, lock-up, 4th. That would explain the small RPM drop then the large one.

Re:Tranny shifts too early?

Dingo, I got mine at Carl Burger Dodge World. They were the only dealer that I found that focuses more on trucks. They usually jump on any CTD's they can get. And the ones they get usually go quickly. Very good dealer. They had gotten my truck in earlier that morning and had time to change all the fluids and put new tires on it. I bought it later that evening. Like I said, they go quickly. ;D
