Tranny question

I just had to get my stock transmission rebuilt at 170,000. I got a total rebuild and everything is stock. I am trying to find out if you can speed up the timing on when the transmission shifts. It shifts fine from first to second but it feels like it falls on its face at the top of second just before it hits third. So is there anyway to just speed up the timing between second to third only? 2004.5 48RE.

Man I really don't know anything about these transmissions but I know it obviously has to start off in first gear. Right? And I can count. It shifts up four times from first gear and yes you are right about the last one being overdrive. Sorry if I used the wrong terminology.

The 48RE is an electronically-governed 4-speed heavy-duty overdrive automatic transmission, stronger than its predecessor the 47 series. Got this off of wikipedia just for old pdogg.

The 4th to 5th you are describing is actually the torque converter locking up in 4th gear. Not sure how to control shift timing other than tweaking the valve body. You might look into a shift kit like trans go.

48re is technically a newer version of the old 727 transmission. it is by nature a 3 speed trans with overdrive. like stated above the "fifth" shift you feel is the t/c locking up.

If you had it rebuilt at a dealer, take it back and have them figure it out.

I just had mine looked at, as it was bad when I bought the truck. The selling dealer covered the repairs and I have a 12 month warranty from Dodge.

Mine was doing the same thing you are describing and it also hunted between 1st and 2nd before it shifted. I had a bad band that took care of the 2nd to
3rd shifting. Before they replaced it, it would just ride along and shift at a differant point each time.

I took it back the second time for the 1st to 2nd issue. I did not find out what they did, but the Service Manager told me the computer was reprogramed with the latest program that controls shifts. What ever they did
it fix it. It shifts great now and the Tow/Haul Mode works correctly.

My transmission guy said there may be a reflash out that I need. I have never had the truck reflashed whatever that is. I guess I will call the dealer and ask about the reflash.

You also need to ask if they replaced all the bands when it was rebuilt and if the correct amount of torque in inch/lbs was applied to each. Check your invoice for parts changed. A band is about 54 dollars. Wrong torque on the ban will make it shift crazy. (loose) There are some good posts here on Ban Adjustments.

I never had to worry about this kind of stuff before. Drove a 6 speed in my last Dodge for nine years. Gotta learn more about the 48RE. Mine had 43000 miles on it when I bought it.

I do know they changed all the bands but I'm not sure if they set the torque properly. There is no inconsistency in the way the truck shifts it's shifting the same exact way everytime.

Yes the shift points can be adjusted on a 2004.5 that has a throttle valve cable.
There are two adjustments on the drivers side of the valve body. One adjusts the pressure the other adjusts the shift points up or down. Neither one adjusts torque converter lock up. Your tranny rebuilder should know, but if not I can send more info to you. PM me if you need.

OK that sounds great. My transmission guy said he thought there might be an adjustment he could make but he thought you had to remove the valve body. One other question. Can you control just how quick it shifts from second to third buy adjusting that cable or will that speed up how fast it shifts in all gears? Thanks NAYSAYER appreciate the reply.
