tranny actuator motor?

my bud has an 05, cummins auto tranny...aprox 80k on it. his trans has been giving him problems, starting in 2nd gear, shifting at bad points etc, if he puts it in 1, it will still start in 2nd at times. a local tranny shop told him there is an actuator motor that shifts the tranny, but you have to re program the ecu when you replace this. the tranny shop is nervous on performing this. any ideas??? is this b.s?? truck is stock, except exhaughst, and a bullydog programmer. thanks in advance

TVA= Throttle Valve Actuator.

I just replaced the one in my '07, and it didnt cause the issues you describe, it would hold gears until 25-2700 rpm's then shift violently. Also popped a code as well.

The issues you describe sound like a bad gov/transducer pack. Its on the bottom of VB on pass side, approx $100 for new one, swap it out and drive.

TTVA - transmission throttle valve actuator, basically the TV cable replacement.

No reflash to install a new one, just steps to get it synched so the ECU understands its readings. If it goes bad it WILL throw codes.

Replace the gov pressure sensor and solenoid before doing anything else. They are the usual culprit in this case. The TTVA motor normally doesn't cause that type of issue and almost always will give signs like a CEL its bad.
