Train Horn Solenoids - Grover 3000

On the Grover 3000/Omega Series train horns, they come with a solenoid that has 3/8" inlet/outlets.

Is it worth the upgrade to get a BETTER quality solenoid? One that has a 1/2" inlet? I still need to run a 3/8" outlet, as that is what the horns have. Where can one find good air solenoids that flow A LOT of air. I have a feeling the one that came with the Grovers is a China cheapo.

I am currently running 3/8" line but the horns are not as loud as I thought they would be. I am running 2.5 gallons of air and 120-130 psi.

Where are the horns mounted? Are you inside the truck with the windows up when operating the horn?
As for solenoids I would look at Semi truck parts. In Des Moines, Ia I would say Inland truck parts, Midwest Wheel, Vander Haag's. Otherwise Truckpro, Fleet pride.
You don't say what part of the country your from so I can't give location specific truck places to try.

go witha ball valve setup, so you can talk those horns, from a lil toot to wide open, let you get more from it than just a blast, kind of like being able to fire a warning shot. 2.5 g of air isn't much nor is 130 psi... but you need to get into a grover site and read into what the suggested volume/ pressure air for your horn is. I roll with a different horn, but 8.5 gallons @ 200 psi just waiting to be unleashed.

The horns are mounted in the back near the spare tire. They are facing towards the rear bumper. I am in the truck when I sounds the horns. I am located in Arizona.

They are loud, but I thought they would be louder. Maybe I was thinking they would be AS LOUD as a real train horn.

mine are Nathan air chimes and have a 1/2 inch pipe inlet. they will absolutely blow your head off at 120psi. real train horns are a whole different animal. thats why they are illegal .

So the Grovers 3000 are NOT really a train horn??
http://www.airhornsoftexas.com/train/train.html

So, tank size does NOT really matter. It is in the psi and horn type that matter, correct??

What are the dimensions of those horns (Height, Width, Length)???

If you look down the page of the weblink you will see the real train horns. Notice the difference in the size of the horns. Where the trumpet hooks into the body the diameter is much larger on the rebuilt horns.
I think if you were to stand behind or lay on the ground behind the truck and have someone activate the horn switch you'd think they were loud. I'm not too familiar with dealerships in Az. The ball valve is a great idea. I believe there is a chrome shop across the street from the Flying J in Phoenix They should have a custom chrome ball valve. I know in Wildwood, Fl. they have several types of valves'. Good luck.

no, the grovers were never mounted on a train. I have heard both, the chrome wanna be train horns that you can buy that are $200 to $300 and real locomotive horns and there is NO comparison. dont get me wrong, the cheapies are loud but dont pack near the punch of a real set. where you live can you hear trains go by at night? how far are you from the tracks? I'm over 5 miles away and can set my watch by the horns at night

So, even with the metal Grovers, the Nathan (real train horns) are much louder?

The way it appears is that the loudness is due to the train horn design MORE than it has to do with the psi and air tank reservoir.
