Train Horn Help

I need to mount my compressor for my train horn. It is a 3 gallon tank. The instructions say that it needs air and that the frame rail is a good spot. It also says that water splashing on it will ruin it. I started to put it in the toolbox, but they say it needs air. I started to put it on the frame rail, but I don't want water to ruin it. What should I do with the thing. I know people put them on the frame rail for their brake. Maybe I could use this compressor for my brake too. It has a 3 gallon tank so I assume it's good enough for an engine brake. It would look good in the toolbox and be protected from road salt and such, but then it would be more difficult to use it for an engine brake. Help!

Im currently working on mine. Been aweful experience. I ordered 5 gallon tank. 3 HUGE horns, never seen any so big, compressor and 25ft extra line for tires. I have instructions for wrong tank, 1/4 of the wire I need, 4 outlet holes in the tank instead of 6 like I need, had to go to lowes, then walmart at 3-30 this morning. I mounted the tank and compressor in the toolbox. only spot the 5 gallon would fit. Still trying to figure out what the heck to use as trigger switch. Tried to tap in horn wire but so hard to get to it wouldnt work. Will probably go to a toggle switch.

I went ahead and put mine in the toolbox. It looks real good. I'm having some run- ins too...They say use black for ground only they didn't give me any. The heavy guage red wire is way too short. Some connectors they say are there aren't. Heat shrink supplied in parts bag...yeh right. And they don't give ya any switches or buttons or a fuse holder for your pushbutton. I'm still hard at it at 2 a.m. I am going to put a dash toggle switch to the relay for the compressor so I can turn it off any time I want and I'm just putting my own small dash mounted push button that activates the solenoid to the horn. I don't want it hooked to my regular horn. The darn horns were soooo big that I had to forward mount them under the bed just behind the cab on the passenger side of the truck. The instructions say to mount aiming the horn down at the road...heck, I'd have to put a lift kit on my truck to keep from dragging them down the road if I did that. Well I'm going to go back at it. Good Luck with yours too....I'd like to hear how yours turned out as well.

I ran into the same problem with mounting. I don't know where you can mount your 5-gallon tank. But I found I could mount my compressor and 5L tank unit inside my fenderwell on the drivers side front fender. Just pull out the liner and look up inside there. This might be a good place to locate your compressor and mount the tank somewhere else. The nice thing about the compressor being there is that the battery supply is only about 18" away so wiring is very easy...

get some sound clips when ur done. I'll get some too. One problem I ran into is when it had 3 wires, 2 supposedly hot and one ground, when we touched them to the battery to see if it would work...nothing. So we thought for about 30 min what it could be. Then we thought of wireing a house. 1 is hot, one is neutral, and one is negative..........

I mounted mine under the bed on the passenger side, between the wheel well and cab. I added rear fenderliners to keep the mud/water off of the compressor but yet it still gets air. I can post pics later is anyone is interested.

I mounted compressor and tank in tool box. From FACTORY horn tapped into positive wire ran that to one end of a toogle then ran the other end of the toggle to the solenoid and the grounded it on the horn assembly. That way you can switch between factory horn and air horns and use the regular steering wheel horn button. Clean easy setup that way. Then in the tool box i drilled a small hole in the bottom corner to run the air line through and then out the little knock out hole in the bed. Then for $35 I picked up a small 12v lawner mower battery, wired that up to the compressor and attached a soft solar panel which I toss out on the roof like once a month for the day while I am at work. That way if it ever leak or something goofy I wont walk out on a dead battery. And the horns are mounted on the transfer case skid plate sloped down so no water gets in the them. Hope that gives you some ideas.
