Toyo M/T's tire compound

I recently ordered a set of toyo mt 33 x 12.5 x 18. While I was talking to a buddy, Matt, today I mentioned what I bought. He says hey what size did you get? I told him and he says I may have made a mistake. Apparently another friend of his bought the same set and is getting terrible life out of them. Matt has 35's and has 46k on his. So I say well there's lots of things that can contribute to your bud's tire life. I guess this guys been to the tire center he bought them from multiple times and finally a guy of the store says that they have had many 33's not get the same life as the 35's. Their reason is 33's are made of a softer tire compound than the 35's. I haven't been able to call any stores today it was way to late when I heard this. Any truth to this? Does this guy have an isolated problem or is this true, 33's being made of a different compound?

Haven't heard of this but suppose its possible. Also, the taller tires get longer life because they spin less times per mile.

Just make sure you rotate often and properly and keep a good alignment to get the most from your investment. The price of Toyo's has gone through the roof in the last 3years. About 30% more.

Ran a set or 295/70 17's for 48k. I think thats pretty good mileage for an MT tire.

NFS I guess size could play a part in that. Didn't think of that but you would think that a tire center would. At least, not tell people tire compounds differences. My problem is cost versus life. If I can get 40k plus I'll be happy but this guy might get 30k. I talked to several people and they all got in the 40's and the ones that didn't flat out told me they abused their tires. Just seeing if anyone heard of this cause I might be able to change before they ship. Thx

I'll be happy with 48k. I think your tire OD is close to a 35, maybe that's what I need to do go a little taller. Just wanted 33's for fuel mpg, looks due to no lift and smaller gear ratio change.

The 295/70 17 is a 33" tire. Worked great to keep the rpm's down at highway speeds and not too much to mess up the ratios.

I towed 10-15k frequently and it worked great with a Smarty. Probably would have got more miles on the tires but oo much towing will eat them up faster.

Noise was minimal and traction on snow and ice was great. Barely knew the roads were slick once it was in 4x4.

As long as your alignment, air pressure and tires are balanced they should last some time. Don't do the burnouts or tire spinning in the rain. I have 315/70R17 Mickey Thompson ATZ and they would last if I took care of my front end. That's the biggest tire killer

I don't think going from a 33 to a 35 will play a huge difference in tire wear, but it does affect it. Alignment, pressure and balancing are the keys. Rotate every 3K -5K if you can. I'll be glad if I get 48K out of mine. I've got 20 to 25K now and I guess their doing pretty good. I just don't want to replace them anytime soon. too much $.

Yea I'm gonna stay with Toyo M/T. If I go back to a A/T I'll always wonder what if. I'll just get truck aligned and stay on top of them. Really appreciate everyone's help.

Hey NFS nice 1/4 times with the 40's. **** I bet that feels awsome off the line. I would like to get into the 13's but have lots to do like trans ect..

The tires I'm gonna be lookin into are the new nitto trail grapplers. They offer them in a 35x12.5r17 and they are an E rated tire. They seem to be expensive but since I have never had any E-rated tire they should outperform the D rated tire. The next tire in my site are the dick cepek A/Ts. They have alot of tread depth and should help get my truck up a loggin rd this deer season. Any body ever ran the Dick Cepeks??

I know where I'm getting my Toyo's they also suggested Cepek's A/T not sure about M/T's. One thing to keep in mind about 10 ply is what their load ratings are cause there is a big difference. For example Toyo 35's x 12.5's are 3450 and 33 x 12.5 are 2910 per tire. I still rolled the dice with the 33's but 35's will prob get better life due to load and revolutions per mile. Just something to chew on. I could go with 275 x 70 that have a hight load rating than 33 x 12.5 but it's not the look I want and I'm not pulling anything right now.

thanks, I guess its not too shabby for a 6spd considering I really suck at rowing the gears. Not gonna do that again until I can replace the weak little G56 tranny though.
