Towing with a HTT/64/13SS
Ok for you guys running the HTT/64/13SS on your 04.5 and up trucks that tow, do you have any surging? I am mainly interested in the automatic trucks but all input is nice. Also what weight trailer do you tow and HP level is your truck?
Thanks,
Doug

Good question, I'm looking at the same turbo form my 04, I was pointed to it because of its all-around good performance, and better thermal capacities with the stainless steel. I plan on towing, so this should be a good thread...

HTT Turbo
Towed over 15k miles with 48' GN 26k weight, turbo works good, but one thing I dont like about it is the waste gate opens up at 34 lbs no matter were I set the spring on stock fueling. You close off the waste gate hose the turbo will go to 39 lbs but you will get a over boost code (not boxes on the truck) unless you put a boost fooler on it, but one thing I dont know is if the boost will go higher if it did not defuel from the over boost code. I had the old smarty 4.4 with the turbo and would hit around 38-39 lbs of boost then the waste gate would open, never closed off the hose with the smarty on it towed good but egt would get alittle hot on a good climb, I feel it needs around 40-45 lbs of boost keep the egt's in check. I plan on puting a boost controller in the hose so I can raise the boost before the waste gate opens. It does not surge what so ever, been happy with it just need to fix the waste gate problem, runs well not alot of lag just on start up, on the road turbo spools right up even lugging the truck. I have had plenty of power on the truck smarty TST and Dr P. lot of the new programs from smarty were done on my truck. I want to say when they (Floor it Diesel) Dynoed the truck they were at 640 HP and 1380 TQ Call John from Floor it Diesel he can help you out on the turbo. Hope this helps you out.

Well, I got it installed last night/morning. lmills you forgot to tell me to use the shorter manifold stud. Had the old turbo off in an hour. Couldn't get that darn new one on for nothing until I saw the studs. The acutator was just getting all up in the way. Had a hard time sliding it under the studs to mount up. Saw the studs and whipped out the MAC stud removers and she was all over then after a few choice words.
EGT's with the quad box have come down to a MAX of 1250. I used to could barry the needle to 1400 no problem/ lifting off the go pedal when EGT's got out of control. Boost is set to 40 PSI. Thought about adjusting the waste up a little to see if she'll cool off a little more. Everything seems to be fine with the turbo. Somtimes I get a little whirl instead of a zing. Seems O.K. though.
I'll hook up to the trailer later. No surging issues so far. It is a little laggy. Hope it stays that way with the trailer. Need some driving time.

No problem at all with surging. It was a touch lagging at startoff but that is because I didn't want to trash my auto before I beefed it up so I only used the 30hp setting and was real light on the throttle. Going to be March before I upgrade the auto I hope. EGT control was excellent. Probably would of been better for me to go with a 65 turbine becasue I don't have enough fuel. Nothing a Smarty wouldn't cure though. We shall see.....

The 65 would have LESS surge than the 64/71 and probably the 62/71. The 65mm wheel will spoolup better and hold boost better, but the 62 and 64 wouldn't be far off...
