Tow / Haul Mode

Does it hurt anything to drive in Tow / Haul Mode if you are not towing. My transmission shifts so much better in this mode. I always use it when towing the horse trailer and Saturday I forgot to switch back after dropping the trailer and noticed how good the transmission was shifting going thru town. I would prefer to use it in this mode all the time if it does not tear anything up.

I don't think it will hurt anything except for fuel mileage. Pete

You should get better mileage since the TC will stay locked more. I like to have mine in Tow/Haul normally. I just wish I could have it default to tow haul every time I start the truck.

Thanks for the info. Now to find a way to make it start in tow /haul and have to shift out for normal if ever used again.

Me too, that IS a bit of a PITA, especially when on a long trip.

I use the TH setting constantly- but I live in the mtns! It was a blessing to find out how much easier it makes driving up and down hills. Really helps the truck translate that power to the wheels.

If anyone ever finds out how to default it to TH upon starting I'm another who'd love to have that option. PITA to always have to switch it! As for mpg- I get 15-17 dropping and climbing 4000 feet of twisty mtn road each way to work daily. Not bad for a big truck.

I believe:

2003 to 2004.5 have od lockout.
2005 has towhaul that can be reflashed to od lockout to prevent constant shifting.
2006 has both od lockout and tow/haul.

I have found that I get worse mileage in tow/haul in some urban situations. If you are stuck where you can only drive 35/40 mph then you will be turning less RPMs in regular mode. I can run in OD at 31mph in those situations. I guess it all depends on your situation.

Tow haul mode in the 05 was different than earlier and later models. All it does is change shift points. Earlier and later models tow/haul locked out overdrive. You can get a module to be able to truly lock out overdrive or the dealer has a reflash to enable this feature.

just wanted to add it will lock up the torque converter in 2nd (if manually shifted to 2nd) and 3rd even when in D, and like you said changes shift points. makes the tranny shift pretty hard during heavy acceleration, don't know if that is something to be concerned about with a downloader/electronics or not.

I like it mainly because I live in Houston and there is always stop and cuss traffic. It seems to get rid of the 1-2 gear hunt back and forth. It looks like from all the the replies that my truck will be in tow haul mode most of the time. Thanks for all the great info.
