My 96 Dodge Cummins automatic (truck no 1 in signature) is making a whining noise when overdrive is engaged. The noise seems to be coming from the front of the tranny, maybe the torque converter. There seems to be a large bearing in the torque converter about eight (8) inches in diameter.

Has anyone had experience with this bearing failing?

Usually the pump will make a whining noise when they go bad or stqrve for fluid. I have never been inside a torque converter but they have to be cut apart and welded back together.

Any other experiences here on the Torque Convertor bearing I describe. I don't believe the problem is the pump. The whine completely goes away when I lock out overdrive.

Overdrive gears have been known to make noise. The older trucks with straight cut gears will whine something terrible between 50 to 70 mph depending on how worn they were.

A 96 should have helical cut gears, but there are torrington bearings in there that could be making noise too.
