Tires upgrade for '03

Is it true that a stock 4x4 2500/3500 single rear wheel truck can accomodate up to a BFG All Terrain 315/70-R17 on the stock 17x8" wheels with no clearance problems? I heard some have rubbing problems. Is the leveling kit a must? Please clarify. Thank you so much.

Re:Tires upgrade for '03

I've got 315/70/17 on my stock wheeled, stock height 4x4 and don't have any problems for the most part. If I am full lock turning to the driverside, I have a slight rub on the frame put since I'm hardly at full lock I don't worry about it much. For the most part I think you should be ok, but every truck is a bit different.

LinearX, when you changed over to these bigger tires what differences did you find? EG, has your fuel consumption improved? Has acceleration decreased noticably? Has the ride changed? If so, how?

Re:Tires upgrade for '03

I think the ride has improved over the Michelins probably due to more sidewall to absorb shock. Fuel milage for me hasn't changed much. I get around 17.5-18 mpg but I drive at 80+ on the interstate. As far as acceleration going away, I've got the 3.73 and I can tell that taking off in second gear is bit different but it's not horrible. All in all, I'm happy with the change.

This maybe a stupid question but a lot of people are saying that these trucks rolled out of the assembly line built differently (specially in regards to the tire rubbing when ugrading the tires. some have problems some don't) . How is this posssible when they have a protocol to follow, use the same parts and other obvious reasons. Is there an explanation to this ??? I just don't believe that this is possible. If it is, please clarify. Thanks.

I believe the snow plow prep group option comes with stiffer front springs. I have this option and just put a set of BFG 315's on mine. No troubles so far.

My truck does not have that and set 2.5" higher in the rear, I have since pulled out 1.25" to get rid of the "stink bug" look.

Anyone find aftermarket wheels that have the correct off set??

Re:Tires upgrade for '03

I don't believe the front end sits any higher than the non snow plow prep group trucks. It seems just as 'unlevel' as the rest, until I level it out with a load ;D Been throwing around the idea of a leveling kit but don't want to regret it down the road when I load it up. Nothing looks worse than seeing these big trucks with sagging rear ends
